Michael - Central London - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a freelance bassoonist and composer living and working in London.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach bassoon (instrumental lessons and reed making), music theory/aural skills, composition, and musicianship.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I attended both the Eastman School of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with a BMus Honors in bassoon performance.

- How much do you charge?

£45/hour for bassoon lessons.
£30/hour for music theory, composition, musicianship.

These prices are inclusive of travel for the included districts. I am willing to travel outside of that range but there will be an additional cost.

I also sell bassoon reeds for £15 a piece and will tailor them for your needs.

- Where do you teach?

I teach wherever is most convenient for the student. I am more than willing to travel to students' homes, which is usually easier and more comfortable for them. I teach in Central London too, but my flat often feels too small for students so I book rehearsal rooms in a nearby building. I can easily teach reed making, theory, and composition from my home.

- When are you available?

I am generally free during the week. Due to my freelancing, my schedule often shifts around but if a consistent time/day is required, there should be no issue in finding something that works.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach any age and any level.

I have vast experience teaching as I have run a private studio for the past five years. The students who I have instructed have gone on to win places in regional orchestras and bands as well as places in top music institutions. I have worked with various levels of players, from starting pupils on the bassoon all the way up to university students.

Within these lessons, I try and incorporate all aspects of music including theory, aural skills, and analysis to allow for a deeper understanding of both bassoon playing and music, bringing the students to question why they should play something a certain way rather than taking it at face value.

In addition to instrumental lessons, I also teach reed making from scratch. I have all the proper equipment to take a student from cane to a finished reed. My method is quite practical and efficient but also factors in the differences from student to student. Because of this, I focus strongly on "reed theory" and certain techniques that can be applied to various individuals, often using Socratic methods of teaching in order for the students to gain an in-depth (and self-realised) understanding of what they are doing.

I also have reeds available for students to purchase and can assist in any adjustments that are needed.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I am able to prepare my students for any exams or auditions they may have.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am an active freelancer around the United Kingdom and America. I have performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Opera, Surrey Opera, London International Orchestra, and various other groups. I am a strong proponent of chamber music and perform with two wind quintets, a reed trio, and a wind octet.

As a composer, I have written music for film, television, and musical theatre. Recently, I premiered my first musical, Mascherato, in Milton Court Theatre, Barbican Centre as a recipient of the Barbican colLABorate grant. I recently worked as part of the orchestration team for 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' (2018).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I do not currently hold a DBS, but it is currently being processed.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Eastman School of Music - John Hunt
Guildhall School of Music and Drama - Daniel Jemison, Helen Simons, Peter Whelan, Dominic Morgan

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the Musicians Union and ASCAP.
