Teaching Philosophy & Approach

I am a Canadian state-certified/licensed ESL teacher who holds a Bachelor of Education with a
Specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language. My educational experience helped me develop
the necessary professional competencies outlined by the Ministry of Education here in Canada. My training provided research-based theoretical knowledge and incorporated this with practical experience within various public-school settings. Each course and internship offered throughout the program played a crucial role in my development as an educator; thus, the practices I implement within my classes are rooted in research-based methods in the field of language acquisition. The lessons that I create are communicative and student-centered to ensure that students maximize their time in the classroom while having fun learning English.

Language learning is a life-long process which does not occur in isolation; therefore, the communicative activities and materials I develop are relevant and contextual so that they can be meaningful to students’ lives and promote a love of learning. In addition, I encourage a positive and continuous cycle of practice and feedback as this helps students reflect and tackle challenges in their own learning processes. For example, I always end each lesson with a focus on form, highlighting grammatical structures so that students have the necessary guidance to progress. Finally, I make use of discovery learning so students can explore grammatical rules on their own first; this student-centered approach fosters a sense of independence and self-efficacy which are important for students to develop personally and academically.
An ESL classroom cannot be effective unless the students feel comfortable taking risks when exploring a new language; thus, completing assignments and passing examinations are only the tip of the iceberg. Education also happens underneath the surface of these pedagogical expectations. Therefore, teachers should actively educate and model how to foster healthy relationships and build trust through respect and compassion. Educators should also teach students a sense of responsibility within the classroom community. For instance, I implement a volunteer system so that students take part in classroom functions (e.g. distributing materials). This type of system helps students feel accountable, included and valued. If the classroom feels like an open community, teachers can better form bonds that will only encourage learning and change for the better.

My accumulated professional experience in education, design, and business, along with my specialization in ESL reflect my ability to adapt to different contexts. My patience, creativity and open mind allow me to do well in unfamiliar territories and bring value to the classroom.
