Music Graduate and Principal Percussionist for the BBC Concert Band offering drums and percussion lessons in Dunstable area.

Methodology

I use my broad musical education, background and experience to not only teach practical skills, but also the underlying theory of music knowledge and aural skills which are essential to supplement a student's percussion skills and achieve the highest attainment levels. I work with students on a one to one basis, tailoring my lessons to meet their individual needs and requirements.

Experience

I am an enthusiastic and versatile musician with a passion for teaching which encompasses both classroom teaching and above all, instrumental tuition. I love to engage with my percussion students of both Primary and Secondary school age, adapting my teaching style so that each can enjoy their learning and achieve their full potential

I have worked extensively as a peripatetic tutor at a number of Primary and Secondary schools with a proven ability to engage with students and inspire them to achieve their musical potential.

I studied music composition, production and percussion in London for 3 years, and graduated with a First-Class Degree with Honours, with additional credit awarded for achieving outstanding results across the full spectrum of modules. I am qualified to teach music theory, composition and percussion at all levels and have composed for, and performed across, a huge variety of genres and styles.

I am an experienced and versatile performer, both as a soloist and in ensembles, stage shows, bands and orchestras. I am currently principal percussionist with the BBC Concert Band.

I have current experience of Rock School, Trinity and ABRSM Exam Board grading systems. I have found that my broad musical education and background and my vocal experience have greatly enhanced student success as I do not neglect the underlying theory of music knowledge and aural skills which are essential in addition to a student’s percussion skills in order to achieve the highest attainment levels. I have also worked extensively with pupils to prepare for their GCSE and A Level solo and ensemble performances and for school concert performances

Christopher Burrett

Profile
An enthusiastic and versatile musician with a broad musical education, background and experience encompassing composition, music production, performing, directing and teaching.
A passion for teaching which encompasses both classroom teaching and above all, instrumental tuition and a genuine interest in student development.
Have worked extensively as a peripatetic tutor at a number of Primary and Secondary schools with a proven ability to engage with students and inspire them to achieve their musical potential.
Teaching philosophy
The bedrock of my successful musical tuition is the balance which is struck between passionately inspiring the highest standards of effort and attainment whilst promoting the underpinning values of respect, teamwork, care and support to create a nurturing and happy environment in which all pupils can enjoy their music making and thrive.
Peripatetic teaching experience and achievements
Rhythm Room Ltd. Apr 2018-date.
The Vale Academy: I work with students from Year R-6. I have proactively supported the extra-curricular activity at the school, putting a band together from my own contacts and performing percussion to support school productions which have included Aladdin and The Lion King.
The Katherine Warington School: Through this secondary school (and my own private teaching practice), I have current experience of Rock School, Trinity and ABRSM Exam Board grading systems.
My broad musical education, training and vocal experience have enhanced student success as I do not neglect the underlying theory of music knowledge and aural skills which are essential to supplement a student’s percussion skills and achieve the highest attainment levels.
I have also worked extensively with pupils to prepare for their GCSE and A Level solo and ensemble recitals and for school concert performances.
Studham Village School. April 2017-date.
I teach children from Year R-4 and genuinely enjoy building a rapport with my youngest students.
I have worked successfully as a team with the wider body of staff to start a jazz band at the school, featuring a strong percussion section and have proactively taken on leadership of the school choir which has progressed to perform at external venues.
Bedfordshire Music Trust County Youth Wind Band. Jun 2014-Jun 2018.
In this role, I engage with young aspiring musicians at what is often their first ensemble experience. The band ethos is both to make it fun and to aim higher both as a group and individually and I seek to bring this dynamic to each school I engage with.
Priory Church Dunstable.Sep 2015-date. Assistant to Director of Music.
I look after the probationers and prepare all choristers for their various RSCM examinations which involves teaching theory of music alongside vocal study. This has extended my experience and successful track record of putting pupils through practical examinations.
Classroom teaching experience and achievements
The King’s School. Nov 2019-date. Music teacher.
I teach as a musical specialist in both a Primary and Secondary setting from Reception up to GCSE level. I direct the school choir and prepared the Christmas Carol Service which involved working with a number of students to perform both individually and in ensembles.
I undertook a year long work experience placement at a Lower School covering all aspects of the teaching assistant role including 1:1, SEN support, small group work and whole class assistance. The study programme was aligned to the NCFE Level 2 Qualification for Teaching Assistants.
Broader Musical experience and achievements
Performer:
I achieved ABRSM Grade 8 Drum kit and Singing both with distinction and have studied percussion as my principal instrument at University, achieving a First in the final year recital.
