About Eve

I am currently in my fourth year of studying medicine at the University of Cambridge. This year I have reduced contact hours and would love to fill my extra time with something fulfilling, such as teaching. The one subject I have missed the most since starting my degree is maths, hence I am very excited to explore it again with students. Maths was always my favourite subject in school and I often found myself being asked by the teacher to help my peers. I understand the frustration of the 'mental-block' that students often face when it comes to maths and aim to provide the patience and flexibility-of-teaching needed to overcome it. I believe the key to understanding maths is knowing 'why' you do something rather than just 'how' to do it, and this is reflected in my teaching style. I hope to help my students find the same passion for maths that I have.

I think that the best way to learn maths is through practise.

My typical lesson structure will involve:
1) 48hrs (minimum) before the lesson, you let me know what work/topic you would like to go through
2) In the lesson, I will start by going through the fundamentals of this topic with you (key equations, rules, etc.)
3) I will work through some example questions with you, explaining not only what to do, but why you do it (as I feel this is essential to understanding maths, and is often left out of teaching)
4) you do a couple of questions independently, and I am there to offer help and guidance if needed

any resources I make before/ during the class can be emailed to the student for future reference

I am also happy for students to bring in homework questions or other work for me to go through with them, as long as I am sent them in advance.

Depending on the lesson content and the student's needs, my lessons can be between 0.5- 2 hours. A 2-hour session will be split into two 1-hour sessions, with a 10 minute break in the middle.

My qualifications include a 9 in GCSE maths, an A in GCSE further-maths and an A* at maths A-level. I also have a 9 in GCSE physics and an A* at physics A-level, which comes in handy in maths too. I have tutored maths previously at GCSE level to multiple students. Additionally, I have experience teaching A-level maths to my peers in college, and so also feel comfortable tutoring at this level. I am also happy to tutor at a SATs level.

I have experience in childcare with children between the ages of 4-13, as I worked at a charity for children with learning and behavioural difficulties for 1.5 years. I am very happy to adjust my lesson structure and length according to a student's specific learning needs.

I can do half-hour sessions if this is how the student learns best, however these sessions will have to be purchased as a 1-hour session, which I can then split into two separate sessions.
