Who I Am and How I Can Help
Hello, my name is Will Bolton, and I am an NHS hospital doctor specialising in academic neurosurgery. Alongside my clinical role, I work extensively in research, teaching, and mentoring, supporting individuals at all stages of the medical and academic pipeline. More specifically, I have undertaken the full integrated academic training programme from Specialised Foundation Programme, Academic Clinical Fellowship, PhD, and Clinical Lecturer. Alongside these challenging academic interviews and career moments, I have succeeded at some of the most challenging clinical interviews in competitive specialities such as surgery.
I offer career coaching, strategic guidance, and interview preparation for those aiming to succeed in clinical medicine, academic medicine, or combined clinical-academic careers. My work focuses on helping people make confident, well-informed decisions and present themselves effectively at key career transition points. I will listen to your needs and goals, and target your progression to achieve success.

Why I Coach
Medicine and academia are highly competitive fields in which success depends not only on ability, but on strategy, preparation, and clarity of direction. I coach because I enjoy helping people think clearly about their career path, make informed decisions at key transition points, and prepare confidently for high-stakes interviews and applications. My work focuses on helping you articulate a strong professional narrative, understand what selectors are truly looking for, and present your strengths in a clear, authentic, and compelling way.
My coaching sessions are career-focused, reflective, and highly practical. Rather than traditional subject tutoring, I work with you to explore your goals and motivations, identify strengths and gaps, and develop a realistic career strategy and timeline. Sessions often include structured interview preparation (clinical, academic, fellowship, or training posts), CV and application review, and coaching around communication, confidence, and performance under pressure. I draw on real-world experience of NHS recruitment processes, academic selection panels, and competitive interviews to provide honest, actionable advice. Sessions are typically 60 minutes, delivered remotely, with flexibility for evenings and weekends when needed.
