About Gordon
I am both a teacher and creator. I teach Science of Cinematography within the Film/TV program at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts. This is a rare class, a general-education science credit within an art program. I also advise famous cinematographers on problems involving optics, photometrics, and experimental film processes in their work. As a filmmaker I have worked on a range of commercials, television shows, and features. Currently, I am the first assistant camera on Saturday Night Live's 'Film Unit.' I always maintain a creative practice. I am extremely fond (and knowledgeable about) black and white analog still photography. I have cameras ranging from 35mm to 8x10 and love working in a darkroom.

I use a hands-on, STEAM education approach. (Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.) The world and the technology available to you is the playground for exploring fundamental scientific topics. In his 'Treatise on Painting', Leonardo da Vinci advises "first study science, and then follow the practice born of that science". A fundamental understanding of the science in cinema and photography will allow you to realize your artistic vision through the technology. My lessons are fundamental, so they can be applied to a broad range of imaging technology and to a wide spectrum of the visual arts. Adapting my standard curriculum to a single person begins with deciding on whether to cover a broad range, or to concentrate on one or two areas. Our first meeting will establish a general or specific approach based on your interests. I am conversant in the fundamental sciences in imaging including: the nature of light, optics, color theory, and human vision. The measurement sciences figure heavily in the photographic artists so I can also teach: photometry, colorimetry, and sensitometry. All of the fundamental sciences can be applied to understanding specific technologies such as light fixtures, the qualities of photographic lenses, cameras and monitors. I only expect experience with algebra at most, and a high school level of physics is perfect. My lesson plans can be tailored for advanced high school students all the way through professionals wishing for a fundamental understanding of their medium.
