About Jake
I’m a university training fellow with over 20 years’ experience in education. I’ve taught and supported people from a wide range of backgrounds, including during around 10 years living and working in East Asia. These days, I design and deliver training that helps researchers and professionals communicate their ideas clearly and engage their audiences.
I’m a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and hold an ILM Level 5 qualification in coaching and mentoring. I enjoy helping people find their own way of speaking well. My style is friendly, practical and honest: I’ll take your goals seriously, give you useful feedback and help you build on what you already do well.

My lessons are built around something you actually need to do: a work presentation, conference talk, interview or other speaking opportunity. You can bring slides, a draft or just an idea.
We’ll work out what your audience needs to hear, shape a clear message and practise delivering it. In a typical 60-minute lesson, we might improve an opening, simplify a complicated section, rehearse part of your talk or practise interview questions. I’ll give you specific feedback and time to try changes during the session.
If useful, we can also use AI tools to explore ways to structure your ideas or anticipate questions. We’ll agree what material to use with them first.
Lessons are online and tailored to your goals, whether you’re preparing for a particular event or want to build your speaking skills over time. I work with professionals, researchers and students at different levels of experience.
