LaTex is an easy-to-use free software with powerful (professional) structuring, typesetting , graphing and referencing capabilities.
It is very common amongst University academics and with scientific publications and conferences. Once you have started with LaTeX, you will realise that many textbooks have also been compiled with latex. It is also what powers some parts of wikipedia.

Course setup
Students that write their thesis in LaTeX get better marks for two reasons. The first is that LaTeX forces you to structure your document and write in a clear, coherent and graceful way. The second is that it produces a very pretty and well typeset document that stands out from other word documents.
I have been using latex for about 5 years. There is a steep learning curve if you have never done any computer programming, but there are some very effective tricks and some very accessible resources, if you know where to look. You absolutely do not need to have done any programming before.
A thesis written in LaTeX is much, much easier to work with. Referencing can be automatic and it handles maths equations, pictures and graphing very well.
