B.A. (hons) from McMaster University 2009- History and English minor
B.Ed with Distinction from the University of Western Ontario 2010
MSc Psychology (Conversion) with Commendation 2015 with research and dissertation focusing on learning styles in adult learners
I taught for several years in England as both a supply teacher in London in various primary and secondary schools, and as a full-time English teacher just north of London.
It was a huge challenge to teach overseas, and learn a new school system, but I loved it! It was a joy to work with my students and see them grow. It was especially rewarding in my last school, where I often taught lessons in the department for students who struggled to cope in regular classrooms (for behavioural or mental health reasons).
I found that my calm and compassionate approach can help when a student is struggling. After all, who amongst us can't understand what it's like to struggle sometimes?
I moved back to Ontario a couple years ago, and have been tutoring a solid set of students online using zoom and Google classroom throughout the pandemic.

While I very much like to adapt my teaching style to fit the needs of my student(s), there are a few general approaches I tend to follow.
Typically, I prefer a "basics first" approach to learning. Based on Bloom's Taxonomy, and simple common sense, if a person can understand and master the basics, then they can build up their knowledge and skills from there.
I also believe strongly in cross curriculum literacy, and that learning can be done anywhere, in any context.
Education can be a fluid and flexible thing, and as long as someone is working towards progress, then that should be encouraged and celebrated. That is why I do my best to try and engage my students with things they will find intriguing, so that they will want to make that progress.
In my teaching, I do also draw from my knowledge and expertise of psychology and how our brains learn, and any special needs my students might have.
