About Amanda

I am a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford University, and a qualified teacher with over 30 years’ experience. I offer online tuition in secondary maths and English, including KS3, GCSE/IGCSE and A level maths, English language and literature, philosophy and critical thinking.

I also offer academic coaching packages designed to meet the needs of individual students. The packages cover study skills development, time management coaching and university application preparation.

In addition to teaching and tutoring, I have worked in senior management roles at independent schools, both overseas and in the UK. In these roles, I have particularly enjoyed guiding students in their academic and career pathways. I have been involved in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as a teacher and programme coordinator. I also have experience of working with students who have special educational needs, as well as students for whom English is a second language.

After determining students’ aims, strengths and areas to focus on, I develop a personal plan. I like to this through discussion with students, because it’s important for them to engage actively in their own development. When starting a new topic, I explore it with students, directing questions to enable active engagement.

For example, in maths lessons, I use diagrams, examples, and technology, such as graphing and geometry apps to enable visualisation and understanding. An active Understanding the link between functions and their graphs can be easier and more interesting for many students when the graph is drawn using a graphing app.
We then practise the topic with exercises chosen at a level first to support understanding, and then to challenge and stretch.

Effective communication is really important, so I aim to help my students to develop their accurate use of English and terminology, and to express themselves fluently.

To consolidate, I set follow-up exercises and assignments for homework to complete before the next lesson. I email this homework together with feedback about the lesson and progress to students and parents. As a teacher and also as a parent, I know just how important it is for parents to be in the loop, so that they know what their child is doing in lessons and for homework, and so that they can give any support needed.

For A level and specialist areas, such as IB and philosophy, I charge higher hourly rates. Please contact me before booking to discuss the specific needs of the student.

As a parent, I know that choosing a suitable tutor for your child is a challenge, especially if you aren’t able to meet in person. Please find below some reviews and emails written to me personally by students and their parents since I began online tutoring in 2020. I hope that this will give you some idea of my teaching style, the work I have done with these students, who are based in the UK and overseas, and are studying at both private and state schools, and the results we have achieved.

S, IGCSE English language and literature – August 2025
Results are out! I’m happy to share with you that I managed to receive and A* in English Language and a 9 in English Literature. I just wanted to thank you for not only helping me reach this point, but also encouraging me to enjoy literature much more. I’m truly grateful for all that you’ve done!

A’s parent, English language – August GCSE 2022
Amanda provided excellent support and guidance for our son for English GCSE. He liked Amanda immediately and found her 'helpful and kind'. As a parent I found her a great communicator, organised, methodical and managed to push him without ever making him feel stressed. I think Amanda is great at providing structured, focussed work that stretched my son whilst also being encouraging and helping with confidence and self-belief - which is exactly what you want from a tutor!

A’s parent, maths GCSE – August 2022
A went from a shaky predicted grade 5 to a results day 7 over only a few months. Amanda did a fantastic job, overcoming initial resistance and sending him into the exam hall in a much more confident mood. We’re really happy with her work and highly recommend her as a tutor.

A, English GCSE (Grade 9, up from Grade 6 in 3 months) – 2023

I’s parent, GCSE maths – 2021
I’s autumn report came out and she got 8. It is really amazing how in such short period of time she has improved and progressed. Amanda has been tutoring I for the past month and I have seen rapid improvement in I’s confidence in Maths. Amanda’s classes are very organized and she assigns homework for the students to practice after the lesson. I is now more confident in maths and finds completing school homework much easier!

Z’s parent, GCSE maths – 2020
Amanda has been tutoring my daughter Z for the last few weeks. Z has progressed from a level 5 in maths to a 7. Amanda has been very professional, supportive and encouraging and has adapted her style to suit Z. Work has been personalised and sent in a very timely manner. I would not hesitate to recommend Amanda or utilise her skills in the future with A Levels. A first-class maths tutor and lovely lady.

S, IGCSE English language and literature A*/A* – August 2022
Thank you so much for all the help and guidance you've shared with me throughout the past year, I could not have done it without you! Other results were just as good, but I still personally feel that Literature was the most memorable one due to the work and effort we've put into it - a subject which I used to find most challenging, but now, an interest. Thank you once again for all your interactive and engaging lessons.

From A’s parent, IGCSE English language and literature – August 2025

I find it difficult to add anything to the already excellent reviews Amanada has been given. She took on A’s tuition in maths online, and they clicked from the outset. Every week he progressed through and understood each topic they covered. Her approach has been just what A needed, and I am so glad we found her on the website.

Amanda is very good, she is patient and like most good teachers has the ability to adjust to the student’s capabilities and improve those. My daughter improved significantly.

A’s parent, KS3 maths – 2021
It seems to me that A is progressing well. I think she is doing quite well at school in maths, and sometimes she says to me, that maths is her favourite subject. I can never tell if she is joking or not, but she certainly has lost her fear of maths! Thank you very much for keeping working with her. I think it is really good for her!

I, GCSE maths – 2021 (grade 8 up from 5 in 8 months)
I can’t thank you enough for all the help and support this year. I honestly couldn’t have got through maths this year without your advice and much needed help. I have grown and developed new skills and think about questions in a whole new way. My maths assessment today was difficult but with questions I was able to think differently to how I would usually. A year ago today, I would not be able to think so broadly. I know you’re technically not my school teacher but you have been my favourite teacher this year!! I really cannot thank you enough miss. Even my teachers have noticed the amazing jump I’ve made.
…I’m glad to inform you, in my last maths exam of the year, I have received a grade 9!!! 35/36!! I was absolutely shocked when I found out today in the afternoon. It’s just a positive way to say goodbye to maths.
…I received a grade 8 in mathematics!! Last year this time I did not think that would be possible. I can’t thank you enough for all your help and support the past year!

H, introductory sessions in philosophy – 2021
Thank you so much for introducing me to philosophy! The session was really useful, and PPE is now a serious contender for the subject I’ll pursue in university.

A’s parent, KS3 English
A has been enjoying and enjoying her online lessons with you every week. As a mother, I also appreciate your enthusiasm, rich education style and serious and responsible teaching attitude.

A, GCSE English language 2021
Thank you so much for everything – I started the year with a 4 (English language) and now am going to be getting a 6. This is a really good outcome for me.

S – adult learner of English as a second language – September 2024
You have helped me improve my writing. I was struggling with my language skills but your technique helped me to overcome my fears of writing. I can now confidently send emails to my children’s teacher. I’ve even found myself enjoying reading – and this was not a hobby of mine before. This has been possible because you always listen to me and try to understand my weaknesses and help me to overcome them.

C’s education coordinator, GCSE English language, literature and maths – 2020
Thank you so much for your support and all of the work you have helped C to produce. I know it hasn't been an easy journey. However, your continued persistence and patience have been invaluable in ensuring C will leave year 11 with several qualifications for which we are extremely grateful.

C’s education coordinator, GCSE English language and maths – 2020
Amanda has shown fantastic commitment, patience and creativity in engaging this student which has resulted in him obtaining a number of qualifications that he otherwise would not have achieved. I have already passed on my gratitude and thanks to Amanda directly but also wanted you to be aware of how well this particular assignment, resulting in a very positive outcome for the young person.

I’s teacher, GCSE English language 2020
Thank you so much for all the support you have given I. It has really helped her in the classroom to complete work. I also think it has increased her confidence.

E’s parent, IGCSE English language and literature, and maths 2021
