About Michael
Hi! I'm Michael, a second-year Medical student at Oxford. As a self-diagnosed geek, I love to read around and learn more about everything, ranging from medicine to philosophy to technology!
Over the last few years, I have realised the importance of teachers in inspiring a passion for the subject they teach. Back in school, my favourite subjects were not the ones I was best at, but the ones taught by my favourite teachers. I have also realised that the influence of a teacher goes well beyond the subject they teach: they can instil confidence and drive in their students that last many years to come.
This has resulted in me in entering teaching approximately three years ago. I have tutored students applying for medicine by helping them perform better in exams such as the UCAT and BMAT.
My aim in tutoring students is to instil a passion for the subject whilst maximising their improvement. Initially, I teach them general study skills which will aid them for the rest of their lives. This includes how to effectively take notes, as well as how to review these notes efficiently through active recall and spaced repetition.

For aptitude tests: Before a lesson, I would ask the student to send me 2 previous completed aptitude tests, as well as any points they feel they are weak on. I analyse these tests, identifying the weakest points of performance. Following this, I would make a plan for how these points can be improved upon.
During the actual lesson, we would go through specific examples and practise them with specific techniques. I would also give the student some additional questions to do after the lesson.
Between lessons, I communicate with students through email or WhatsApp to monitor progress.
For interviews: This follows a similar principle of focusing on weak points of a students performance. Practise interviews are he best way to prepare and improve. I tailor these to address student weak points and the requirements of the universities they are applying to (e.g. Oxbridge applications are far more academic, while MMI universities tend to have a more holistic approach).
