As an A-level student I found myself in the unfortunate position of missing almost 50% of my time at college. This meant my ability to learn independently was really put to the test before I had arrived at university. I therefore place an emphasis on the individual learning experience. To say you have a set style for each student is to miss the point of learning, which in itself is individuated and subjective.
This being said, I will initially structure a tutorial in the way I learn myself, going through essay plans. By writing detailed essay plans it will help students know factually where they need to improve as well as practicing how to articulate their arguments. We will then scrutinise the essay plans against the relevant mark schemes as I believe the key to successful exam preparation is an ability to critically analyse your own attempts at answering a question. An awareness of the examiner’s reports will also feature in my tutorials, as ultimately it is their opinion that will matter.
Furthermore, a focus on what a student is doing positively is crucial in essay based subjects to give students the confidence to write an essay with flare that will stand out to an examiner. I hope that my enthusiasm for my academic subjects will make my tutorials a fruitful experience for my students.
I graduated this year after reading English Literature at the University of Oxford. For the English Literature Aptitude Test to get an interview at Oxford I scored 58/60 (one of the highest marks awarded). I always found taking exams quite traumatic until my final year of A-levels and since then have found the process somewhat less painful. I really love my subject, and I think that reminding students what they love about their subject is really crucial for positive progression.
That in mind, I found applying to university a very enjoyable process. This was because my personal statement was the hardest I have ever worked academically and the end result was an essay I took great pride in sending off to my five universities.
I was a regular contributor to the Oxford Student (our student run newspaper). I was also a member of the University’s DanceSport society! I also have interest in other areas of academia, undertaking a three-week course at the University of Stanford as a visiting student.
