About Delilah
Hello! I am a violin teacher with over 4 years of experience helping more than 200 students develop their violin playing at all levels. I came to violin teaching from a performing background that included both orchestral and solo work, and I bring the knowledge gained from those experiences — about practice, about performance preparation, about the relationship between technique and musical expression — into every lesson I deliver. I teach students from their very first encounter with the violin through to diploma-level preparation. I am experienced with ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations at all levels, and I prepare students for these examinations with great thoroughness and care. I also prepare students for music college and conservatory auditions, for orchestral auditions, and for competitive performance at regional and national level. Beyond formal assessments, I work with a significant number of students who play violin for the sheer love of it — for amateur orchestras, string quartets, folk sessions, or simply for themselves at home — and I find these students some of the most rewarding to teach, because their motivation is purely musical and the progress they make, while less formally measured, is often the most musically meaningful.

My violin teaching philosophy centres on the relationship between technical freedom and musical expression — the idea that technique exists to enable expression, and that the highest level of technical development is one where the physical demands of the instrument disappear from the player's conscious attention and leave them free to focus entirely on the music. Getting to that level takes years of patient work, but even in the early stages, keeping expression at the centre of technical practice makes the technical work more meaningful and more effective.I begin with the foundations: instrument hold, bow hold, bow distribution, and the basic principles of left-hand technique and intonation. I am careful and thorough about these foundations because problems that develop here become increasingly difficult to correct as the student progresses, and because good foundations enable rapid development in a way that poor foundations permanently prevent. I use a wide range of exercises and repertoire pieces chosen to address specific technical issues while remaining musically engaging.As students develop, I introduce more advanced technical work: shifting, vibrato, more complex bowing techniques, double stops, and the full range of orchestral and solo violin technique. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations at all levels, as well as for auditions and for the demands of orchestral and chamber music playing. For students at advanced level, I provide the kind of sophisticated musical and interpretive coaching that prepares them for conservatoire study.
