Patrick Davies - music theory teacher in South London, able to travel to pupils' homes. Trained at the University of Manchester and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Methodology

Professional and dedicated clarinet, saxophone and music theory teacher based in central and south-west London, with experience performing across the UK and teaching musicians of all ages and abilities.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the clarinet, saxophone and music theory, often to prepare for Associated Board (grade) exams.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I graduated with honours from Manchester University where I studied music, and am now studying for a Masters degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I have also been awarded a Diploma in performance by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

- How much do you charge?

£35 per hour or £20 per half hour.

- Where do you teach?

I teach private students at the Barbican, and also travel to students' homes around London. I live in Brixton, and am in different parts of town throughout the week, including Kensington, Battersea, Tooting and the City of London.

- When are you available?

My hours are entirely flexible. Some pupils come at a regularly time once a week or fortnight, others prefer to arrange each lesson individually to suit their timetable.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and levels, from absolute beginner up to post-grade 8 and university level.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for graded music exams both with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and with Trinity Guildhall. Many students choose not to take exams.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught privately since 2010, and have taught in music centres across London since 2016. I am a consultant music tutor for the London Music Centre, and work for the Wandsworth Music Academy and Fern Hill Music Centre. My teaching work includes tutoring beginners up to post grade 8, adults and children, one-to-one and whole classrooms, teaching instrumental lessons and music theory, and coaching youth orchestras. I am employed to teach the clarinet, saxophone, flute, recorder and theory in schools, music centres and for my own private practice.

I am also busy as a performer, playing the clarinet, saxophone and flute in orchestras, chamber groups, big bands and theatre bands.

I am formally trained in performance, improvisation, composition, harmony & counterpoint, orchestration, musical theory, history, analysis & aesthetics.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up-to-date Enhanced DBS certificate and am trained in child safeguarding to level 2.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I was taught by Tim Spencer and Kevin Banks (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra) in Bournemouth. I then studied at Manchester University under Mark Jordan (BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) and subsequently with Tim Lines and with Les Craven, principal of the Welsh National Opera. I have played in masterclasses with Tony Pay, Paolo de Gaspari, Pascal Moragues and Robert Plane. Most recently I have studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Andrew Webster, James Burke (BBC Symphony Orchestra), Jenny McLaren (Philharmonia) and Rob Ault (ENO).

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Musicians' Union.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My youngest students are seven; my eldest are in their seventies. Some are playing for fun; some are planning to be professional musicians. Some students just enjoy playing by themselves; some love to play in bands or orchestras. Music can play a part in our lives in a great variety of ways, and I enjoy tailoring lessons to an individual student's goals.
