My teaching style is very much based upon the rapport I find with my students. Some may require more visually appealing lessons, or some might enjoy a more hands-on approach; tasking students to construct a comic with only the panels, and no words. How does a comic panel create emotion without words to help shape the story's structure? Can that type of skill then be applied to creating stories on the page? I tend to ask these questions, amongst others, to my students, to help them expand their own imaginations and to approach new challenges in ways they did not expect to initially.
I have taught for at least two years within both a private tutoring company and a community college, dealing with both groups of up to 12 students at a time, and individual students that require further assistance. I have a wide variety of experience within English, having qualified at a Master's level in English and Creative Writing, have worked in a leading Welsh publishing house, and have taught the subject to varying degrees of level and capability.
Having recently completed my training as a teacher over the past two years (2018-2020), I am now a fully-qualified college-level teacher with experience in a private teaching company and within a professional college in the field of Essential Skills, working with students who have a varied level of competence and skill (Entry 1 to Level 3). I now intend to use these skills – alongside my previous knowledge in the fields of English Language, Literature, and Creative Writing – to teach within a college full-time for the first time.
Work Experience as a Teacher
Neath and Port Talbot College September 2019 – May 2020
Essential Skills Tutor
Beginning in September of the second year of my training, I began working within the very college I was learning to become a teacher. I began with observations of the tutor I was assigned to, but within two weeks – due to illness on the tutor’s part – I had to quickly take over the set hours as a tutor, and stuck with the same group throughout the whole year. Initially I was tasked to handle both Mathematics and English Language skills with the group, however it soon transitioned to solely teaching in English Language, due to another tutor deciding it would be best to focus two hours solely on each subject, rather than split the set into an hour each. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that struck 2020, I also helped with online teaching for a few months towards the end of my teaching period, and learned new and valuable knowledge in this field. Listed below are some key skills that were either learned, or enhanced, due to the work experience that I had.
Information & Computer Technology: The pandemic that struck 2020 allowed me to utilise previous experience with computers and modules learned throughout my training to help with online courses and allowing students to continue their work and learning remotely.
Language: My education in the field of English and Creative Writing specifically allowed me to work efficiently as a tutor within that subject, providing insight where I could to the students, answering questions if needed, and provide an accurate response.
Management: Given the scope and scale of skills within my classes, it was paramount that I could manage individual students that required either more or less supervision when needed. This included setting the right kind of work with appropriate difficulty, giving homework when necessary, and providing feedback through marking said homework. I made it a desire to create a strong rapport with students, and I plan on continuing that throughout my journey as a teacher, to provide the best kind of tutoring for the individuals.

In my spare time, my main hobby and passion is writing. It can be a sanctuary for those who feel like they cannot cope with worldly problems; a way to lose yourself within your own imagination. I find it as a way to explore new possibilities of dealing with problems within the real world. More than once I have found myself presenting a problem that has yet to occur, but am able to resolve a problem due to me exploring different paths of ideals. I also occasionally partake in archery, having found an interest in it while studying at university.
