Dr Peter - Wimbledon - French

Methodology

Full-time Philosophy lecturer at the London School of Economics with extensive experience tutoring the major Philosophy and Religious Studies syllabi at Key Stages 4 and 5.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I specialise in tutoring Philosophy at degree and A Level, but also offer help with essay writing and university admissions. I also teach French language and EFL, having taught for two years at ESSCA School of Management in Paris.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a PhD in Philosophy from Reading University, an MA in Philosophy from the University of Paris VIII, and a BA from Reading. I have published articles in peer-reviewed journals, and come with outstanding references.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £50ph for my own private clients. For peace of mind, you can also request my services through any of the above agencies, however in this case rates will vary.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at students' homes or at my own home in SW20. I often travel to central London, and can travel longer distances if necessary. I also offer Skype lessons when this is more convenient for students.

- When are you available?

My timetable is flexible, and I can offer lessons during the day, in the evening, or on weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and levels.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE Religious Studies: Philosophy and Ethics (OCR)
A-level Philosophy (AQA)
A-level Critial Thinking (AQA; OCR; NCC)
BA Philosophy
MA Philosophy
PhD Philosophy
GCSE French
TOEFL/ TOEIC/ IELTS

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Email correspondence and Skype video link

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Philosophy is one of the toughest subjects on offer, so it carries great rewards and high risks. Even for the most able students, having an experienced tutor is the surest way to success. One-to-one teaching means I'll always start from what you already understand, even if you think you're completely lost. From there, we'll move quickly up to the syllabus requirements and, if you feel like it, far beyond them.

Super tutor

Dr Peter is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 8 years' experience teaching Philosophy in higher education, and have taught at the University of Reading, Royal Holloway, and the London School of Economics. I also have five years experience as a private tutor, and usually provide my services through the top London agencies (including Bonas Macfarlane, Bright Young Things, Enjoy Education, Gabbitas, and Simply Learning). My experience as an A Level tutor and in higher education makes me an ideal tutor for students applying to study Philosophy at university. In addition, I have many years' experience teaching English as a Foreign Language and have tutored French up to GCSE.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have received teacher training from the London School of Economics and Reading University.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

British Philosophical Association
Society for Applied Philosophy

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have taught students of all ages and levels. Here are some experiences of my Introduction to Philosophy students, in their own words:

Peter's style of teaching guided me through the chosen topics, breaking down each section so we could discuss any aspect of the syllabus I had been struggling with in a clear and comfortable way...

...At every point Peter tried to allow me to reach the conclusions of questions with only his guidance, which was far more helpful for me than him simply telling me the answer. Peter's vast range of knowledge meant that discussion could flow easily between different subjects, allowing me to build deeper pictures within my mind of the historical context of different theories or philosophers...

...Finally, I found that Peter's teaching was most effective because I felt comfortable talking to him; at no point did I feel self-conscious about asking him anything, and I feel this is quintessential to a successful tutoring relationship.

B

“I have had the benefit of working with Peter for a year. As a teacher of Philosophy at University, Peter brings an exceptional amount of knowledge beyond what is taught in the classroom which is not only interesting and engaging, but also crucial to demonstrating knowledge beyond the mark scheme which helps to attain the highest grade...

...I certainly benefited hugely from Peter's lessons, scoring a remarkable 200/200 in my AS level Philosophy which is a credit to Peter! This is such an amazing result and I am very grateful to Peter for the work he has done with me.”
