About Phoebe
I have over eight years’ combined experience of teaching adults and children of all ages at the University of Edinburgh, in Heritage, and privately. I was nominated for the category of 'Best Overall Teacher' in the University of Edinburgh Students' Association Teaching Awards. During my university career I also spent a decade volunteering as a one-to-one student mentor for Widening Participation schemes and was a summer tutor for the Sutton Trust.
Teaching Highlights from 2014-2021

I offer comprehensive tuition in English Language & Literature for students of any age from 6-18+. Sessions are 1-2 hours long and focus on different areas depending on the student's skills and needs. These include but are not limited to: close reading, critical thinking, planning and writing essays, research skills, referencing, information management, revision techniques, and exam preparation for GSCE/National 5/A-Level/Highers/Advanced Highers/International Baccalaureate.
I am a conscientious teacher and certified Associate Fellow of Advance HE with a passion for literacy, critical thinking and tailored learning. Now more than ever students of all ages are subject to strict criteria for academic success, which is determined by national frameworks that often hinder rather than help individuals to develop their strengths at school, university and in their careers. Online tutoring can be an educational lifeline, as it gives students the one-to-one attention they need.
I take the time to carefully assess each individual’s strengths and weaknesses in order to design a plan for progress. My approach relieves the stress of institutional targets at the same time as making them easier to achieve. I build up my students’ confidence and help them rediscover the joy of learning.
I am committed to helping people overcome personal barriers. If English is your second language, if you have dyslexia, or if social anxiety affects your ability to participate in larger groups - I can help. I am especially sensitive to the impact of chronic illness on the experience of education and possess the necessary patience and understanding to help you flourish despite these difficulties.
I teach remotely using Skype, Teams or Discord. For those who experience acute social anxiety, I am perfectly comfortable making calls without video and am happy to make any other possible adjustments that may help.
Testimonials
“I cannot recommend Phoebe highly enough. She has been helping my son to identify his needs, adapting to them, and filling the gaps in his knowledge . . . She uses her professional knowledge in various ways, and gradually he has grown in confidence - we have been very proud of his progress! He enjoys her lessons and always looks forward to the next one.”
— Kanako W., parent of 11-year-old private tutee
“Superbly detailed feedback for essays. Incredibly helpful with queries about essays and exams . . . Makes you feel at ease and as though you can question things . . . always gives handouts and helpful links. Explains the basics when she is afraid they have been misunderstood.”
— University of Edinburgh student, Teaching Awards Nomination for ‘Best Overall Teacher’ in 2015-16
