About Jack
I am currently a PhD student at the University of York where I simulate magnetic materials by using high performance coding techniques to implement theoretical models.
I recently completed a Master of Physics degree at the University of Warwick, where I spent my final year making algorithms to classify neutrino interactions at the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermilab.
I also have experience in engineering and manufacturing: I spent a gap year in which I succesfully developed a prototype printed circuit board for use in aerospace applications.
I spent a few months at my local secondary school helping students at the GCSE level with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science as an assistant, and found the experience enjoyable and rewarding.

For students studying for their GCSEs/A-level, it's normally important to ensure the students are prepared with a good set of revision techniques, to ensure that they can cope with the large amount of course content.
To start with, any tests students have been taking e.g. end of module assignments or mocks, are a good way of seeing what concepts the student is struggling with. That's if the student doesn't have any other problems which they feel are more important.
I then usually like to give students problems to solve, and ask questions about the steps they are taking. This gives me an idea of what they are thinking, and whether any concepts have been misunderstood. It also keeps the student actively thinking, and I feel this is better than having me constantly explain things, which might be quite disengaging and quite boring.
At times where a student has misunderstood a concept and it does need to be explained, I like to make use of diagrams wherever I can. I find visual aids can be a big help, particularly where an understanding of a physical model needs to be built in the mind, so that the student has a more intuitive idea of what's going on.
I will also set homework assignments from their course specification to ensure that they practice any concepts they previously didn't get, to help it stay set in their memory.
