About Tim

I have a rich academic background to bring to the table, with a BSc in Theoretical Physics (Dean's List Award, Graduating Top 10) and an MSc in Quantum Dynamics (Graduating Top 10), both at Imperial College London. I am also the youngest lecturer of Physics (teaching Quantum Physics at master's level) at the University of Barcelona. I believe this gives me a great advantage to teach in a way that others will understand as I have recently had to study many of the topics I now lecture - I know which bits were hard, and what was hard about them because learning them is a recent memory for me. I've honed my teaching skills over 7 years of dedicated tutoring every week. During this time, I have taught (click "see more" to see the full list): - A-Levels: Over 1000 hours teaching maths, further maths, and physics with extensive experience in exam prep for various boards, and a 96% success rate for students getting their grades. I have also helped students with their personal development, career paths, and personal statements. - University entrance exams: Over 700 hours preparing students for the MAT, PAT, TMUA, STEP II, and STEP III papers. - Undergraduate and Masters: Over 1500 hours of teaching physics and mathematics covering elementary undergraduate topics like vector calculus, real and complex analysis, differential equations, linear algebra and tensors, to electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and more advanced topics like quantum field theory, group theory, differential geometry, condensed matter etc. My mission is to transform seemingly complex topics into accessible knowledge, ensuring that you not only grasp the content but also develop a profound appreciation for what is a beautiful and elegant subject. There's nothing more rewarding than witnessing the moment when understanding clicks, the proverbial penny drops, or that sought-after lightbulb moment occurs in STEM subjects. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a passion for problem-solving, I am eager to share the gift of maths and physics far and wide. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Quantum Sciences, I collaborate with leading players in the private sector of quantum technologies through a partnership with ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences. One day, I hope to be able to start my own Quantum Technology company, and this idea is the premise of my PhD! I regularly attend and present my work at top conferences internationally, and am currently guest-lecturer for a quantum physics course for Master's students in the University of Barcelona. I am a dual national (English/French) based in and around London, enjoying both the outdoors and music. Alongside my scientific pursuits, I am an avid musician and composer, actively participating in the UK YMSO and having been an alumnus of the University of London Symphony Orchestra (ULSO).

My approach is counter to the typical "recipe following" encountered by many students at school, with a strong focus on curiosity, questions, and personal development. My teaching style is dynamic, interactive, and most of all focused on fundamentals. Almost all of physics is governed by a small set of concepts, and understanding their logical connections enables you to form a web of knowledge which is clear and intuitive. Together, we can develop and consolidate these core concepts with problem solving and practical applications through visualisation. Having that intuitive "gut feeling" through visualisation and fundamentals can revolutionise the way you connect a wide range of topics under a unified conceptual framework! Together, we can foster a deep understanding of physical principles in this way with enthusiasm, expertise and mathematics. Click "see more" to see how I do this in three steps. For undergrads and master's students, check out below for a list of taught topics - I have loads of great insights, tips and tricks for mastering your courses, lab reports, thesis and applications to graduate studies and PhD places! 1) Foundations and context - here we motivate problems and concepts so that we understand why certain techniques are important, and why to use one over another as opposed to blindly following recipes. 2) Consolidation and visualisation - here we focus on deriving key results and visualising their consequences to gain an intuitive understanding of their origins. This will allow us to place concepts and results in a unified framework by solving problems together. 3) Refining and problem solving - here we focus on developing independence by testing our intuition and solving more extended problems that connect our newly established results from (2), further consolidating ideas into a connected web of knowledge. I hope in my lessons that we may have a renewed appreciation for physics and mathematics at a pace that matches you best. Undergraduate Topics: - Electromagnetism - Thermodynamics - Statistical Mechanics - Waves and vibrations - Optics - Relativity - Nuclear/Atomic Physics - Particle Physics - Quantum Mechanics (see my Quantum physics ad) - Mathematical methods (see my maths ad TL;DR Statistics, Calculus, Fourier Methods, ODEs & PDEs, Differential Geometry, Group Theory, Calculus of Variations) Graduate Topics (NB: Check out my quantum physics ad): - Quantum Field Theory - Quantum Information Theory - Quantum Optics - Complex systems and criticality - Condensed Matter Theory - Quantum Many-Body Physics - Quantum Computing - Quantum Machine Learning - Quantum hardware (rydberg atoms, ion traps, photonic technology, superconducting qubits)
