About Rishi

After amassing six gold medals in major national and international competitions, Indian-American pianist Rishi Mirchandani debuted as soloist with the Grammy award-winning Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the age of 18. He made his first of four appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York at age 12, and he has performed to critical acclaim in England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the United States.

Mirchandani holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, summa cum laude, from Yale University. He earned Distinction in Mathematics and was one of twelve students (top 1%) in his year admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa honour society as a third-year student. While pursuing his mathematics studies, he also studied piano with Elizabeth Parisot and founded the Yale Undergraduate Piano Collective. At commencement, he received the Stanton Wheeler and Marcia Chambers Award for outstanding artistic contributions to campus life.

Mirchandani subsequently moved to New York to focus on music professionally. He completed his master's degree in piano at the Manhattan School of Music with Jeffrey Cohen and Solomon Mikowsky, sponsored as a winner of the President’s Award. He then earned a Professional Studies Diploma at the Mannes School of Music, where he studied with Thomas Sauer and won the coveted Steinway Award for artistic excellence and service to Mannes. Mirchandani quickly became a New York audience favourite as a soloist, chamber musician, and song pianist, receiving invitations to appear at Carnegie Hall, the Bohemian National Hall, the German Consulate of the U.N., the Union Club, Klavierhaus, and many other renowned venues in the city.

Now based in London, Mirchandani is recently completed an Artist Diploma at the Royal College of Music. He studied with Dmitri Alexeev, Ian Jones, and Andrew Zolinsky. He received sponsorship from the institution as an RCM Scholar.

He has received additional guidance from Lang Lang, Richard Goode, Boris Berman, Robert McDonald, and Eldar Nebolsin. Mirchandani's recording of Nancy Galbraith's Three Preludes for Piano was featured on the acclaimed Centaur Records album Strange Travels, which garnered a spot on the "Want List" in Fanfare Magazine.

Mirchandani joined the teaching staff of the renowned Charterhouse School in September 2025 and also maintains a successful private studio. His students routinely receive top honours in exams and competitions, including invitations to perform in Carnegie Hall. He previously taught undergraduate piano proficiency at the Mannes School of Music and served as a Teaching Artist for Midori & Friends. In 2024, he gave a masterclass as a guest artist at the Carnegie Mellon University Preparatory School of Music. He believes earnestly in music’s ability to help human beings discover their inner power, natural grace, and shared humanity.

My approach as a teacher is deeply informed by David A. Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory. I believe it is critical for students to be actively engaged in the learning process as opposed to passively receiving new information. Wherever possible, I avoid “spoonfeeding” directions to students in lessons. Instead, I ask questions, play games, initiate guided improvisation, and create other activities to enable my students to experience, explore, and discover. I aim to activate multiple senses of cognition: visual, aural, and kinesthetic. Ultimately, my goal is to equip students with musical skills and insights that they can apply independently to new pieces for the rest of their lives.

From an artistic perspective, I strive to impart the musical value of humility to the composer. From the early stages of learning, I encourage my students to seek out well-researched editions of the music they study and to pay assiduous attention to the composer’s markings on the score. I also make sure that my students have a thorough understanding of music theory so that they can more easily discern patterns and composers’ artistic intentions as they learn new repertoire. Using these premises as a starting point, I encourage students to develop their own personal interpretations.

I believe that listening to a lot of music is critical to the development of a well-informed musician. It is analogous to the importance of being well-read if one wants to become a good writer. Accordingly, I give weekly listening assignments, typically related to the repertoire students are working on (same era, same composer, etc.). The objective is to contextualize the repertoire being learned and to impart tasteful musical sensibilities. However, I discourage students from hearing recordings of the specific pieces they are learning – at least in the early stages – so that they can independently conceive of an interpretation that suits their personal reaction to the music.

Enforcement of a strong work ethic by parents and teachers is critical to the success of younger students. At the same time, I deeply believe that the greatest source of motivation for practicing exists within the student. Excessive pressure from a parent or teacher, or the promise of extrinsic prizes for good work, will not lead to long-lasting motivation or a genuinely satisfying learning process. I try to activate each student’s intrinsic motivation with listening assignments and a joyful, non-threatening atmosphere within the lesson.

Research shows that learning as a social endeavor is highly effective. Therefore, I believe that friendship and camaraderie among my students is essential to their progress. When possible, I pair students in duets, and I conduct group classes twice each term.

My lessons are 60 minutes in duration to allow sufficient time for training in five areas: technique, theory, ear training, repertoire, and musical philosophy. My approach has consistently yielded successful results for my students, who routinely earn top honours in exam and competitions – including invitations to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York.
