About Stepan
I am a British-born Ukrainian / Irish traditional musician, session musician, songwriter translator. I was accordionist & co/songwriter with the original 1990's line-up of Folk/World music band "The Ukrainians". Appearances included Ukraine's second anniversary of Independence in Kyiv, to the Bumbershoot & Glastonbury festivals in the USA & England, & numerous European festivals & venues. We also recorded a soundtrack to a Nike sportswear advert. I toured with "The Ukrainians" around Europe, Canada, and the US, and Ukraine for the joint tour with Ukraine rock giants V V. Radio appearances included Peel & Kershaw sessions & other British, Canadian, US, & European Radio & TV. I was Accordionist for Welsh Folk Rockers Here Be Dragons 2007 to 2014 for American ABC TV Debut and Celtic Music Festival in Chicago in 2007, Italy tours of 2011 and 2012, France 2014. They headlined at Cardiff International Arena for Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2013. Besides this, I have done session work for various projects. Here are some examples:

Accordion on NY Ukrainian duets Darka and Slavko "Povir"(Believe) .
Accordion on "Elvis Lives Here", by The Swagger Band featuring Swill (Phil Odgers) also of The Men They Couldn't Hang.
Consultation on music for a scene in the film Bitter Harvest.
Translation and releases of Ukrainian songs in English and vice versa, and original compositions.
I still perform solo, and with Waltham Cross based Ukrainian function band Zhnyva, (since before The Ukrainians). and with my daughters, both trained singers.
2020 - placement of music in film "They who surround us".
Ongoing performances at Ukrainian community events both solo and with other musicians and singers.

I teach from beginner level to competent for further self-improvement. I specialise in Ukrainian and Irish folk, and other European traditional music. My approach is to introduce basic music theory (if needed) alongside learning pieces so there is a constant sense of achievement and confidence to apply learning to self-improvement. Learning should be fun. I use easy-to-understand terminology depending on the student's requirements in explaining both basic music theory and the mechanics of the Accordion. Previous students have ranged from children starting out on beginner accordions to a music teacher who wanted to transfer her piano skills to piano accordion to then teach it at school.
