About Maryline
I have over 40 years of experience teaching music, working with students of different ages, backgrounds, and levels of ability. Throughout my career, I have taught piano not only as a technical discipline, but as a way of thinking, listening, and relating intelligently to music. I am a professional pianist, PhD in Music Therapy, qualified Psychotherapist, and Orchestra Conductor, with a Diploma in the History of the Arts. This interdisciplinary background allows me to approach teaching with both musical rigour and a deep understanding of how people learn, respond, and develop over time. My work is grounded, structured, and ethical. I value clear boundaries, respectful communication, and realistic expectations. Students can expect lessons that are thoughtfully prepared, individually adapted, and held within a calm, professional framework. I am particularly known for my ability to work with students who feel stuck, anxious, overcritical, or disconnected from their musical voice. Many of my students come to me after years of study and discover a clearer, more sustainable way of playing and practising. Teaching, for me, is not about imposing a method. It is about guiding each student to build an intelligent, expressive, and lasting relationship with music.

My approach to tutoring My teaching is centred on how a person relates to music, not just how quickly they produce results. I work with listening, bodily awareness, musical meaning, and clear structure, so technique grows from understanding, not pressure or imitation. Lessons are calm, focused, and intelligent. We slow things down when needed, ask good questions, and build a way of playing that feels coherent, expressive, and sustainable. Progress happens through clarity, not force. I don’t teach through constant correction. I teach students how to listen, how to think musically, and how to self-regulate while playing. This creates independence and confidence, not dependency on the teacher. Techniques and teaching methodology Careful work on listening, tone, phrasing, and musical intention Technique taught in context, always linked to sound and meaning Attention to posture, movement, breathing, and physical ease Reframing mistakes as information, not failure Developing inner hearing and musical imagination Adapting the pace and structure to the student’s nervous system and learning style My background in music therapy and psychotherapy informs my work, but lessons remain musical, grounded, and practical, not clinical. Typical length of a lesson 60 minutes is standard and recommended Longer sessions are possible when deeper work is needed I prioritise depth over rushing. One clear, well-integrated insight is more valuable than covering too much material.
