My experience in tutoring has usually been to assist students with whatever materials or assignments they're having issues with. That said, my favorite way of helping them connect with the language on a personal level is to expose them to popular culture, i.e. music, films and literature they might enjoy, and use it as a basis for study.
I have a very international background and speak five languages, which I think makes me a very adaptable person to different students' difficulties and needs. I hope to be able to help them not only become more confident speakers, but also be more acquainted with the culture.
Portuguese is my first language and I am very passionate about it, and hope to be able to make you enjoy it too!
I taught two Portuguese classes while studying in Beijing, at a language center annexed to my university. I don't have formal experience in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language, but because I do in English and had experience tutoring, I was given the opportunity to come up with a syllabus and stay to teach. I taught a Speaking Practice class and a Listening Skills class; both were beginner-level, both were for adults, and in total I had about thirty students, most of whom without a university background. It was an extremely enriching experience that forced me to be flexible and attentive to needs I might not have anticipated, and think creatively about ways to connect my students to a language that was so foreign to them.
Having spent most of my life studying other languages, I'm familiar with common difficulties experienced when learning a new language, and being bilingual helps me understand what an English-speaker might try to say or mean. I feel your pain - Portuguese can be really hard!
