About James
I am passionate about English Literature and will start a PhD in October 2026. I have direct experience tutoring children, including SEND, across a variety of Key Stages.
As the father of an autistic child, I am particularly sensitive and understanding of SEN requirements, including PDA, ADHD, AuADHD and other ASD needs.
In sessions, I am easy-going and desire to make the whole experience as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. I believe that in such environments learning can - and does - thrive.
One learning technique I often use is relating GCSE texts and lessons to contemporary cultural and social reference points that teenagers can understand and appreciate. I am also passionate about film, music, video games and other media - and often relate these topics to the work.
Ultimately, I want to illustrate English as a fun, entertaining subject that can be utilised in a vast collection of job roles and life situations, from the complexity of designing video game narratives to the simple task of writing an email.

I take a bespoke and individualised approach to each student that I am tutoring. The plan is always to make the work easier, less stressful and even enjoyable!
It is my experience that the emotional barriers are often the biggest challenge for learning. Therefore I begin my tutoring with a free one-hour session, which ensures the student (and parents) are happy with the plan before we progress.
This session is a simple discussion about the student’s experience of English and the challenges they face or have faced in the classroom. Then we take a look at their work, and together agree on a pathway forward, planning a potential week-by-week series of integrated goals.
I believe building this working relationship with my students is critical to final success. I truly believe in a collaborative approach which can make English (and reading) an entertaining and enjoyable experience, rather than a stressful and demoralising one. At each and every stage I ensure the student is happy and engaged.
In sessions, I use my large body of knowledge and skills across all Key Stages. I mainly focus on filling the gaps and enhancing skills, whether that is elevating writing and comprehension, reading, handwriting, or SPAG-related issues. We take on one issue at a time to not overwhelm the student, building strong foundations week on week.
In terms of qualifications, I have a First Class degree from the University of Manchester, an MA from the University of London, and am progressing to a PhD in English Literature in October 2026.
I believe there is no issue we cannot solve, and I believe in every learner’s ability to shine with the right support!
