About JHC pottery
I'm the owner and resident potter at Art Space on the Coast, a working pottery studio in Downtown Pacifica. Before clay became my full-time craft, I spent years in corporate instructional design and talent development, which shapes how I teach. I pride myself on working with students "where they are". I'm also active in the local business community as a member of the Seaside Merchants Association. My studio practice spans wheel throwing, hand-building, and specialized techniques like sgraffito and mocha diffusion. I find joy in helping students find their own voice in clay.

I teach pottery at my working studio, Art Space on the Coast, in Downtown Pacifica. Lessons cover both wheel throwing and hand-building, and I bring students through the full process: centering clay on the wheel or shaping by hand, trimming, glazing, and firing. I also teach specialized surface techniques like sgraffito, mocha diffusion, and glaze chemistry for students who want to go beyond the basics and develop a distinctive style.
My approach comes from years of hands-on studio practice combined with a background in instructional design and talent development from my corporate career. That means lessons are structured to actually build skill step by step. I am good at breaking down techniques clearly, adjust pace to how you learn best, and give real feedback rather than just letting you "figure it out" at the wheel.
What sets me apart is that this isn't a hobby studio teaching side gigs — it's my full-time working pottery practice and retail space, so you're learning in a real working environment from someone who throws, glazes, and fires every day. Students get access to a fully equipped studio and the kind of technical depth (glaze chemistry, advanced surface decoration) that goes beyond a typical beginner class, whether you're picking up clay for the first time or refining more advanced skills.
