About Josh
I am a graduate of Leeds University who is now working towards a PhD in Biology at Bristol University. I have been playing the piano since I was 5 and passed all my exams with distinctions and merits. I really enjoy teaching the piano and have a few years' experience doing private lessons. I am keen to help young piano players use expression and add colour to their pieces, as I believe this is where the highest marks are attained, whilst also instilling good fundamentals in terms of scales and technique.

My lessons are fun and engaging. We will begin by going back and forth between tutor and student on the piano trying to practise our techniques (legato, staccato, expression). Then we will move onto exam relevant practice. First we will go through scales and I will help the student with their tone, and fingerwork across a balanced set of scales, arpeggios, and chromatics. We will then practise some sight-reading - my lessons have a large focus on sight-reading as it is essential for learning your pieces faster. We will then go through their chosen pieces. I will allow the student to demonstrate how far they have got and then I will identify some strengths and weaknesses in their pieces. I will help them with their expression and technique throughout the piece so they can achieve the highest marks and then set targets for the next lesson.
