About Amos
Tl;dr: I have a 1st class BA in Philosophy and Theology from Oxford, where I am a first-year MPhil in Philosophical Theology. I also love teaching philosophy - it's my favourite thing to do!
Exam-wise, I got three A*s at A-Level and won the Gibbs Prize for best performance in Philosophy papers in the Honour School of Philosophy and Theology while at Oxford for undergrad.
Teaching-wise, I have extensive online tutoring experience for Religious Studies (nearly 200 hrs). I was also headhunted to teach philosophy - for a total of five weeks - for the Reason & Rationality summer programme, where I taught students between the ages of 13-18 at Swarthmore College and Princeton University, in a convivial, conversational environment.
Writing-wise, I have received three Emergent Ventures Grants for philosophical writing, the most recent of which I am using to co-author an academic book about the existence of God. In secondary school I won two economics essay prizes and published several peer-reviewed philosophy papers. I also have a Substack blog about philosophy called Going Awol, with an audience of about 4,500 email subscribers.

Lessons with me are conversation-based, mirroring the Oxbridge Tutorial (but less stuffy!).
We'll start by talking through the topic, and I'll likely ask you to have a go at explaining it to me: this isn't a test, it just helps me gauge your level of confidence.
Next, to ensure you know each topic inside-and-out before exam time, I will frequently ask you to argue both sides of the case. Once you've grasped the topic by the nettle, I will set exam-style, practice essays, which we will talk through in detail in our sessions so that, by exam time, your knowledge will be visible on the page.
My lessons are aimed at GCSE and A-Level students in Religious Studies, as well as undergrads and postgrads (or, really, anyone who just wants to practice philosophy and needs something to ping ideas off), and I work hard to keep them relaxed, convivial, and tailored to the needs of each student!

Perfect! Amos is a great philosophy tutor. He picks up arguments and ideas very fast, and he knows a lot about many parts of philosophy. When I bring him something new, he sees the point right away and helps me work out what really matters in it. He is patient, and he never makes you feel bad for not knowing something. He is also just a good person, which makes the lessons something I look forward to. If you are looking for a philosophy tutor, go with Amos.

Amos consistently defends positions I oppose with strong and compelling reasons. This is why ive enjoyed reading his writing. He seems to know his subject especially concerning philosophy of religion and ethics. Hes also got a good sense of humor.
Amos knows his stuff cold, but that’s only half the battle. He’s one of the most charismatic and enthusiastic teachers I’ve ever had. He’s one of the four people I credit with igniting my passion for philosophy. There’s almost no one I’d recommend more highly.
I have worked side by side with Amos as a philosophy instructor. He is the one of the best teachers I have ever seen — better, dare I say, than most of the tenured professors I know. Whatever he is charging, it is probably too little.
I am a retired teacher of philosophy and rhetoric. I have read several of Amos Wollen's essays online, and I find his work impressive. When I have commented on his work, he has always replied with respect, patience, and good humor. Although I don't always agree with him, he knows his subject well and can explain complex ideas effectively to the broader public as well as engage with members of his field. I am confident that his skill at online communication and depth of knowledge will make him an excellent Superprof.
I‘ve been consistently impressed with Amos’ ability to clearly articulate his thoughts while doing his best to formulate them as jokes. He’s very astute and a pleasant fellow. Time spent talking with Amos is time well spent. 5 stars
Amos has a tremendous ability to translate complex subject matter to be understood by the layman. This is a skill that cannot be underrated. He wears his Oxford Philosophy & Theology 1st class honours degree lightly and you won’t find a tutor who can help you prepare more thoroughly and understand more deeply the subject matter you are focusing on.
I’m a tutor who has known Amos more than a decade.Amos is a first-rate mind whose speeches at Socratic Society are both full of knowledge and wit. Having had many conversations on ethics with him; where I have always learnt a lot, I am confident he has the ability to convey philosophy effectively.
Amos is a patient and thorough tutor who has always inspired confidence and growth in his students. In my experience with Amos, he creates a professional environment saturated with deep knowledge of both the topics he is teaching and the needs of the students he is teaching. He is an absolute expert of his field and always makes remarkable progress by providing in depth feedback and scrutinising every aspect of your exams. I highly recommend Amos.
