About Jack
Hello!
I am a pro trumpet and flugelhorn player born in the North East. Having spent over 11 years in London, I'm so happy to be living back in the region.
After growing up in the Newcastle music scene, I have toured and worked with various projects in the country and internationally, most notably 3 years with Olivia Dean, as well as spending time playing with Joy Crookes, Geordie Greep, Imogen & The Knife, Cassie Kinoshi's seed., Opus Kink, The Brass Funkeys and many more. In the studio, I've also recorded for artists such as Gregory Porter, Declan McKenna and Sekou.
My playing experiences span a huge breadth of styles, with jazz, improvised music, rock, pop and traditional/ folk musics all influencing my playing style.
I've been teaching alongside playing for most of my professional life, and have gained a lot from helping students in the same way my teachers helped me.

As an improviser and performer, I recognise the importance of a solid foundation in technique. This foundation allows you to play what you can hear. In turn, the more facility you have on your instrument helps you develop your ear and ideas even more. Personally, I have largely focused on the Louis Maggio and Bill Adams techniques. However, I see teaching as a flexible process - I am more than happy to find what works for you, drawing on my extensive resources to guide you.
Despite putting huge importance on facility, for me the most important part of all this is the music. I'm interested in helping people find their creative voice based on their inspirations, influences and goals. I believe there is no one right way to do anything, and everyone has their own unique identity! So, with an eclectic experience of playing in all sorts of situations, I'm well equipped to guide you in the right direction.
I've also been an active composer of music since my teenage years and composition is something that I love to work with.
I'm looking to start lessons in mid-September 2026. I'm happy to travel, or if you don't have a suitable space I'm able to teach at my place in Heaton. Due to various touring commitments and last minute schedule changes I often need to be pretty flexible, although I should be able to teach a lesson most weeks.
