About John
I have over 25 years of experience in both Oil & Gas and now Mining. My primary qualification is in
Instrumentation, Controls and Safety Systems. During my career to date I have worked in almost 60 countries
around the world and have seen projects from concept through FEED, detailed design, implementation,
commissioning, Handover and then ongoing maintenance i.e. the whole lifecycle both onshore and offshore.
After I graduated, I initially spent 12 years as a Senior Field Commissioning Engineer for ICS Triplex (now owned by
Rockwell Automation) and then Triconex.
In this role, I worked with the system development team and ran the Factory Acceptance Testing with the client
before taking the systems to site and installing all the panels and user interfaces. I would then complete the
commissioning and run the Site Acceptance Testing. Once the system had been handed over I would then run
operating and maintenance training courses for the clients technicians.
For the last year, I have been working in the Sustaining Capital department for Rio Tinto in the role of Technical
Assurance and governance.
My job is to work with project leads to ensure that we are building the right project to meet the ongoing
production and safety targets for RTIO and that what is being delivered to the facility is the best and most cost
effective solution.
The key is to ensure that every part is designed and constructed to the applicable Australian or International
standard and that every aspect of the design is focused on what is needed as a result for the end user, not just
from reliability and functionality but also for ongoing ease of maintenance and how can we best utilise emerging
technology to help monitor and control what we build so we are proactive not reactive?
