About Jonathan
My name is Jonathan Smith and I live in Otley on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. My love of the Yorkshire countryside runs deep and is expressed through my painting. Whilst I exhibit and sell my work, I thoroughly enjoy teaching others and to inspire them with a love of oil painting. I take a client led approach, allowing the student to develop at a pace that they are comfortable with.

I use a mix of studio work and plein air painting to take my clients on a journey to discover the joy of landscape painting in oil. First stages are theoretical involving colour theory and colour mixing and then we get straight on with painting en plein air, in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. A lesson typically lasts two to three hours. I have been a professional oil painter for fifteen years and have exhibited my work across the region. I have regular students of all skill levels and regularly give talks to local art clubs. My lessons can be targeted at any age, and groups are also welcome. My main motivation for teaching is not to show how to paint a beach scene, or a snow scene, but it is to give the student the requisite skills, knowledge and understanding so that they can paint what they wish.

I have been taking lessons with Jonathan for about six weeks and the improvement in my art has really improved. I have painted a landscape I am very proud of .Jonathan takes his time and shows easy short cuts to mix colours and apply oilpaint to canvas.
I would highly recommend Jonathan to anyone like me a frustrated novice or a experienced artistI have been painting with Jonathan for about 6 months and started as a novice. I found him through a local Facebook page and started having lessons earlier this year.
The difference between his courses and many others is that Jonathan teaches you the actual painting process, from theory to practice, so that you quickly acquire the skills to be able to paint what you want.
He's a friendly guy and the lessons are really easy -going but challenging.
