About Pilar
My name is Pilar Bolumburu, and I am a designer with expertise in digital fabrication and sustainable materials, currently based in London. Throughout my career, I have extensively used Rhinoceros, particularly for creating models for 3D printing and CNC fabrication. I have over five years of experience teaching Rhinoceros and other software programmes at Fab Lab Santiago in Chile, working with students of diverse ages and backgrounds. Education has always been a central focus of my career, and I hold an MA in Education and Technology from University College London, where I graduated with distinction.

Lesson Plan: Beginner’s Introduction to Rhinoceros Software Duration: 2 Hours Level: Beginner Materials needed: Rhinoceros software installed in PC/MAC. Objectives: - Familiarise students with Rhino’s interface and basic tools. - Learn to create and manipulate 2D and 3D shapes using predefined tools and Boolean functions. - Understand curve drawing and extrusion to create custom designs. - Apply a project-based, hands-on approach with tutor support. This two-hour beginner’s lesson introduces students to Rhinoceros software through a mix of guided explanation and project-based learning. The first half focuses on exploring the interface, including key elements like viewports, toolbars, and the command line. Students will create simple 2D and 3D models using predefined shapes (e.g., boxes, spheres) and modify them with transformations such as move and rotate. They will then explore Boolean operations to combine or subtract objects and practise creating compound models like a hollow cube. These tasks emphasise foundational skills in Rhino’s workflow. The second half transitions into creating custom designs using curves and extrusion. Students will learn to draw curves, manipulate control points, and extrude curves into 3D objects while experimenting with solid and surface options. Guided by the instructor, they will complete a custom design, such as a vase or nameplate, by combining the learned skills. The session concludes with a Q&A for troubleshooting and suggestions for further exploration of Rhino’s tools and capabilities.
