About Phil
Hi I am Phil. I have been playing the guitar for fifty years and teaching it for forty years! My professional training was at The Guildhall School of Music from where I graduated in 1992 when I became Phil Booth AGSM! After graduating I pursued my studies privately for another twenty-five years, whilst earning a living playing and teaching. I have performed every type of concert from solo classical guitar recitals to playing in a a rock band, at venues as diverse as The South Bank and town precincts! Having taught both privately and in schools the biggest revelation I had about the learning process was that what holds people back is much more to do with psychological factors (self-image/world view), than actual musical ability; playing music is the easy bit, "getting out of our own way" is the difficult part, and also the bit that most teachers don't even mention, let alone teach! Realising this and battling my own demons I have also studied many parallel subjects including Tai-chi, Meditation, Yoga, Alexander technique, Hypnotism, NLP and a lot more(it is a wonder I ever found time to play the instrument!) All my teaching is geared towards the student's needs, you can progress at your own pace. Study for exams and diplomas, or just play for fun. You don't have to be "gifted" or have a "special ear" or any of that nonsense as long as you have hands that work and at least a minimal level of intelligence you can learn, and I can teach you whatever you need.

Perfect! Phil is clearly a very experienced and knowledgeable guitar instructor with a friendly and approachable manner. His focus is on understanding what the student wants to achieve and working out a pathway for getting there. Definitely recommended.
- Peter is likeable person with an engaging manner and a good balance between humility and assertiveness. The lesson was pleasant from my perspective because Peter asks intelligent questions and responds to what you tell him.Phil's response :

I've known Phil for many years. I was head if music at a school and appointed Phil as our guitar teacher. He is an excellent musician and teacher. He is very encouraging to his pupils and an excellent communicator. I unreservedly recommend him as both a teacher and musician. Norman Durrant MA BA Hons FISM. Teacher ,composer, pianist abd conductor
Phil is the real deal. I was recommended him by a retired music teacher and I had lessons with him for about 4 or 5 years. He teachers guitar , classical, electric and acoustic at all levels. He is not only an incredible guitarist but he also knows and teaches all of the practical stuff and theory as, and when, you want it. He is very patient, zen like at times, and looks at the best way to teach you as an individual. Always looking for solutions to any sticking point you may have. I started as a relative beginner and my guitar playing came on leaps and bounds after my lessons with him, playing level 8 pieces towards the end. I really can't recommend him enough regardless of what your starting level is.
I first met Phil in November 2022 after researching for a guitar tutor. By my second lesson, I could tell that we were going to get along as Phil has an easy manor and a good sense of humour which put me at ease and confident that he would be able to guide me in my quest to play the guitar. Phil not only explains the guitar well, but can very expertly demonstrate his abilities. I would have no hesitation in recommending Phil for anyone looking to learn the guitar, be it from a position of complete novice to an accomplished player looking to improve their skills.
