About Russell

I started playing music when I was five and have never stopped since. I flitted between Piano, Violin and the Cornet for a while before finding the Saxophone which I became obsessed with before then moving on to the electric guitar. While developing my skills on both I also started engineering audio and managed to gain experience at a number of studios (The Townhouse, Miloco Recording Studios...etc) while also gaining playing experience in session bands (playing live with Mike Batt was a highlight) and then recording artists in my parents basement. This culminated in working for the BBC Proms and then Sky while building up my own studio and reputation to a point that I started collaborating on projects with other producers and artists such as: Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Bashy, The Fanatix, Andy B, DMX...etc and not just myself. I then began mentoring other guitar players and producers and out of that my teaching programme was developed.

Building guitar technique is like building a house, if the foundations are not strong then they will not support the more intricate and complex details that overlay them. My aim is to build lessons around each individual student that work for them and set realistic goals that they can achieve in a reasonable time frame based on their current ability level. My lessons are typically an hour but I am more than happy to do longer or shorter. I have been a private tutor for over three years and have taught students attending institutions such as The Brit School as well prepared students for exams and music scholarship entrance tests. I teach all ages and ability levels (under 10's to +50's), be it singer songwriters, blues, jazz, shredding, metal or just good pop music, I'll find a way to get you where you want to be.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I developed a passion for music at a very early age, I was obsessed with the saxophone from about the age of 5. However, I was too young at the time to start playing it so I learned the basics on the piano, cornet and violin first. Once I was able to play the saxophone I became obsessed with Jazz and the advanced theory that comes with it. It wasn't until I was thirteen that the electric guitar came into my life, being driven home from school one day my dad began to play a David Bowie live album and from the first note I knew I had to somehow get the sound I was hearing into my life for real. After a year of endless pestering and academic hoop jumping later my dream came true! I owned an £80 SG style guitar and I had a cheap as chips Marshall amp. I sounded terrible but I didn't care I knew I had found my musical 'voice'.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Alas no! I cannot listen to anything on repeat endlessly without inevitably getting board. Interestingly, I can listen to music without getting board if I am able to keep it fresh. I love all types of music, for me it's not about the genre it's about how much love and care has been put into the song or composition in question.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult or riveting course I could give would involve the following. I would set up a series of different recording scenarios, to simulate and actual professional session environment. Nothing is harder than writing and recoding professional level guitar parts, everything must be pretty much perfect about your playing, hearing ability and you must have a least a firm grasp of music theory, arranging and orchestration. I would start with simple ideas at slow tempos and then gradually increase the difficulty: layers of interlocking parts, harmony parts, faster tempos, ideas that require multiple techniques in a short series of phrases, key changes, modal playing and then switching between heavy contrasting genres. On top this would be technique focused exercises based on scales and arpeggios all done to a click track that I would gradually increase in tempo: tapping, sweeping, alternate and hybrid picking would all be included. I would then combine this with improvisation routines to push the students skill ceiling to its maximum.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

For me, at the highest level all instruments become equal. They all have their own subtle intricacies and nuances that take a lifetime of work to fully achieve effortless command over.
  • For me, at the highest level all instruments become equal. They all have their own subtle intricacies and nuances that take a lifetime of work to fully achieve effortless command over.

Consistency and discipline are the best metrics to indicate sustained and prolific success for me. That means playing when you don't want to, getting up that extra hour earlier, not quitting when you get frustrated, being measured and methodical in your approach to playing or practicing. It can also apply to how you approach finding work as a musician and how you deal with the negative aspects of the music industry and the effects it can have on your mental health. It's important to foster a strong sense of inner drive and self belief that will see you through challenging periods, you also cannot be afraid to make sacrifices if necessary to achieve your goals or having to navigate challenging situations rather than choosing the easy route.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would love to meet BB King, Eddie Van Halen and Chic Corea late night in a bar. BB King for his stories and wise words, Eddie Van Halen so I could find the secrets to his flawless technique and Chic Corea for just his knowledge and understanding of Jazz and music theory in general.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I was studying for my Jazz Saxophone grades my teacher told me something very profound. I had been telling him about another student that had been giving me a hard time about my playing chops, I wasn't 'technical' apparently. My teacher (who taught both of us, separately) laughed and said "someone who plays any old note at any old time is not technical, just because someone can play fast does not make them technical, playing with purpose, understanding and intent is being technical".
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I've found that people are a lot like songs, everyone is different, respecting and understanding that is crucial if you want to get the best out of people. Every person is going to have their own way of learning, understanding and replicating information. Your job as a teacher is to figure out how each student does the above and then tailor the tuition to suit them and their learning style. At the same time you must also push the student out of their comfort zone and to do this you must also build a relationship based on mutual trust and understanding. I have found if the student feels like they are receiving a lesson plan that has been built around them in a meaningful and considered way they are much more likely to allow this to happen and thus flourish as result.
