I always aim for my students to feel encouraged and motived in the most natural yet manageable way possible. I am aware of how important it is to have a teacher that is a role model as well as someone you can trust to be yourself, make mistakes and find what it is that inspires you the most. Ive been lucky enough to have some truly inspirational and influential teachers that have changed my life in so many ways, and I really strive to be that kind of mentor. Being positive and inspiring is my fundamental concept.
I am currently in my 4th year at the Royal Academy of Music in London studying the Jazz Trumpet. I Recently did an exchange year in Miami at the Frost School of music. I regularly perform around London, the rest of the UK and Europe with my own bands and as part of other groups in many different festivals, venues etc.
I have got a lot of teaching experience in many different forms, all contributing to my well informed and well rounded approach. I have run many workshops for a mix of young children to adults focusing on both classical and jazz for all instruments. This has often been through the National youth Jazz orchestra and through the National Youth Jazz collective and many other organisations.
As well as this I have done a variety of freelance individual lessons, online and in person and is up to date with the new demands of teaching during the pandemic. I am Very versatile, and happy to teach all ages and abilities about the trumpet, classical or jazz and Improvisation for any instrument.
I started learning the trumpet aged 9 at my local primary school. I achieved grade 8 distinction at the age of 13 and an LTCL diploma aged 16.
At the age of 14 I gained a place on classical trumpet at the Junior Department of The Royal Academy of Music, London on a scholarship. A year later I also gained a place on the Junior Jazz course at The Royal Academy of Music.
I successfully auditioned for the National Youth Jazz Collective Summer School for five years and in summer 2015 (aged 16) was one of two UK 16-19 year-olds chosen to attend the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony in Stockton, California.
After studying at The Purcell School for Young Musicians for 2 years (aged 16-18), I began studying at The Royal Academy of Music on a scholarship for the 4 year BMus Jazz degree from September 2017.
I chose to do an exchange year for my third year (2019/20) and attended the Frost School of Music in Miami, studying with Brian Lynch. I am now in my fourth and final year back at The Royal Academy of Music.
I have won a few awards over the years, the main ones being :
BBC Young Musician Jazz Award 2016
British Jazz Awards ‘Rising Star’ 2018
And I was recently a nominee for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2020
I was also named one of Londons most influential people in 2019
I became a full time member of NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) in January 2017 having ‘depped’ in the band many times in the previous year or two. I left the band in summer 2019 when I went to study in the US. NYJO perform regularly around the country and also deliver workshops with their NYJO ‘Ambassadors’ which I was involved in. In November 2016 the BBC invited me to be the featured soloist on flugelhorn with the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra’s performances of Kenny Wheeler’s 59 minute long ‘Sweet Sister Suite’. The first performance on Thursday 17th November at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was recorded by
the BBC and broadcast across the EU including the BBC’s Jazz Now show.
I perform around the country in festivals, theatres and all major Jazz clubs with ‘The Alexandra Ridout Quintet’ my own band which performs original material.
I was delighted to be chosen by British Jazz luminary Clark Tracey to perform in his ‘Tribute to Stan Tracey’s Hexad’ during 2017 and from early 2018 to be a member of his latest Quintet who regularly perform all over the country and have released an album called ‘No Doubt’ . A second album and nationwide tour is planned for Spring/Summer next year. I have also performed and recorded with many other ensembles including family band ‘The Ridouts’, Matthew Herbert’s Brexit Big band (across Europe), The London Jazz Orchestra, Patchwork Jazz orchestra, Calum Gourlay’s Big band, Yazz Ahmed’s Polyhymnia, Guy Barkers Big Band Christmas
at the Royal Albert Hall, many duo’s, trio’s, quartets and quintets with friends and performed twice at the 2018 Proms –as a featured guest for ‘40 years of The BBC Young Musician’ and with NYJO.

Perfect! Very enjoyable lesson. Alexandra is a gifted musician and a skilled Communicator.
Alexandra is extremely reliable and focussed. She is exceptionally musically talented and hardworking and I believe her to possess many of the key traits to make a good teacher- patience, kindness and the ability to engage and inspire others. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
Alex is a highly professional and personable teacher. I have worked with Alex for several years as both an educator and a performer. She is full of enthusiasm, and always wants the best for her students. She not only has a wealth of experience as an educator, but also as a world class professional performing musician, so brings this experience to all her lessons. I wholeheartedly recommend Alex as a trumpet teacher!
I know Alex from playing along side her in ensembles, and just from that, I've learned so much. I can only imagine what a student will learn studying with her privately. She is professional, yet sweet, caring, and fun to be around. Alex will help a student learn and practice the necessary tools needed to perform at a high level on the trumpet, as well as help a student find his or her creative side, as she is a prolific improvisor and composer that is fluent in countless styles of music.
