I teach the oboe from beginner to advanced, the recorder at beginner level and Grade 5 Music Theory.
Having a "portfolio career" where I work in lots of different capacities within music and with different people has made me a very versatile and adaptable person. This applies to my teaching method as well - I always tailor my teaching to individual student by adjusting how I explain things and choosing suitable and interesting repertoire. I always focus on good technique and nurturing my students' musicality. I became a professional musician because music is what I love the most (I moved to the other side of the world aged 13 to study music!) and I always convey that to my students which I believe keeps them motivated too. Although there are so many advantages to entering grade exams, I do not see it as a necessity in learning music. The one thing I encourage strongly to all my students is to join an orchestra or an ensemble, as that always creates a great incentive to keep practising, more so than the exams.
I am a professional freelance musician who trained at Chetham's School of Music (Manchester), Royal Academy of Music (London), and Guildhall School of Music & Drama (London). I moved back up to Cheshire in 2015. As an orchestral player I perform regularly at venues such as Bridgewater Hall, Manchester Cathedral, and Liverpool Philharmonic. I am also a member of a wind quintet, Magnard Ensemble who perform and give education workshops all over the country and there are lots of tracks available to listen on Spotify and Apple Music.
I have taught privately for over 10 years and while living in London I was the oboe teacher at Hill House International Junior School in Knightsbridge. I now teach at a private school in Chester and private students in Manchester, Stockport and Macclesfield. My students all achieve high Merit or Distinction for their ABRSM grade exams.
I currently charge £20 for 30 minute lessons, £25 for 45 minutes, and £30 for 60 minutes. Unless you are a beginner, I recommend at least 45 minutes per lesson to give us enough time to get proper work done!
