About Elijah
I am a professional violist and violinist, as a two-time soloist with the Knox County Symphony, and active violist with the New Albany Symphony Orchestra. I perform extensively at Kenyon College, giving recitals, having world-premieres, chamber music on viola and violin, performing with the Asian Music Ensemble, and curating ensemble performances for special events.
In addition to my performance and education within the U.S., I studied in Vienna, Austria during 2026. I received instruction from world-class professional musicians in the Volksoper and Wiener Symphoniker in chamber music and viola. As an active composer, I also gave my world-premiere of a song-cycle for viola and piano titled "Neue Dichterliebe" in Vienna.
I have years of proven teaching experience, with my students placing into their top orchestras, winning youth symphony positions, and receiving top honors in adjudicated performances. My ethos is to prepare students for living their fullest and most meaningful life, which means that I teach music for their enjoyment, steady progression, and recognition. I teach not for the next audition, orchestra excerpt placement, or adjudicated performance, but for learning viola/violin and to grow continuously.

I believe music is powerful, meaningful, and a wonderful conduit for learning about oneself and their abilities. It can express, paint pictures of emotions, and even move others to profound states.
I live and breathe music, absorbing myself in all aspects: teaching, playing, listening, recording, repairing. My ultimate goal in lessons is to teach my students about themselves, their emotions, their abilities, and their ideals of beauty. In this goal, I adjust to my student's individual needs, goals, and hopes. Whether it may be a professional track of music, or simply playing for enjoyment.
Gaining expertise, virtuosity, and holistic knowledge of music playing, history, and interpretation are vital skills used all throughout life enveloped in music. Learning in a high support and high expectation environment, how to tackle difficult problems, finding your voice, believing in oneself, making your own interpretive and technical decisions--these are all the benefits of learning music with me.
Of course, technique is important. I focus on developing a beautiful and warm tone reminiscent of the Cleveland Orchestra tradition and my pedigree of teachers from Galamian and Zukerman traditions. I am a voracious learner and adopt an eclectic technical approach striving to unify Karen Tuttle's coordination system, Dorothy DeLay's individual amplification, and my own ideas of hearing, feeling, and seeing.
My lessons are a mixture of my passion, my humor, and my absolute commitment to each of my students. It is a calling for me to have the chance to enrich others' lives and through a medium I love with my whole being.
Every student of mine is completely themselves, and unique, and deserve individualized curricula, instruction, and methodologies.
Often, we start with scales or exercises. I believe these rudiments are vital to a solid baseline ability. Then, we may progress to etudes or other technical excerpts. Covering primarily specific bowing techniques, era-specific literature, or audition excerpts. Then, to repertoire, to cover a comprehensive education on classical music theory, history, technique, and performance.
Additionally, playing along with my students, demonstrations, and ensemble duets are crucial parts of my lesson as well. Paying homage to Mr. Shinichi Suzuki, language and music learning are similar, and hearing, seeing, and feeling are all vital parts of the learning process.
Lastly, using my experience in repairing hundreds of instruments, I use my expertise to assess students' instruments and set-up to make sure their instrument and bow are in excellent condition.
