About Galen
Hi, my name is Galen! I am originally from the United States but lived in New Delhi for 8 years where I entered into the deep tradition of guru-shishya parampara (guru-student tradition). Since moving to NYC in 2019 I have been lucky to receive the opportunity to perform in such stages as Carnegie Hall and Chhandayan Center for Classical Music. I have also formed the band, Compass Trio, an ensemble of original music that draws from Hindustani and Flamenco music. I still see myself as a student and love the opportunity to teach new students so that we can all continue to learn together.

My approach to teaching music is to steward to the needs of the student. Whether you want to be able to perform on renowned stages, or merely want a grounding musical practice to inspire you, we can craft an approach unique to your goals! My musical foundation is based in Hindustani Music and sitar.
This rich form of music theory is based on the concept of "Raga" - and can be adapted to any instrument. I have many different students ranging from sitarists to western musicians who are interested in opening up their modal capacities. My fluency with western music makes me a great fit for a variety of students.
My lesson plans always incorporate fundamentals of Hindustani music, starting with using the voice and drone and developing into practices, compositions, and improvisation. Open to all levels and experience levels!
