About Chess
My name is Rafał Stępień, and I’m a passionate chess player and coach with over 30 years of experience. I have played in many tournaments and leagues in both Poland and the UK. My ECF rating is 2136, and my Polish national rating is around 2010. I enjoy teaching young children how to play chess in a clear, fun, and friendly way. I focus on helping kids understand tactics, basic openings, and how to think ahead in the game.

Teaching Experience As a passionate chess coach with over 10 years of experience, I specialize in working with children, teenagers, and adult beginners. I’ve successfully helped students reach their goals – whether it’s winning local tournaments, preparing for school leagues, or simply building a lifelong love for the game. I adapt every lesson to the student’s level, using real examples, puzzles, and classic games to make learning fun and effective. My approach is friendly but structured, encouraging logical thinking, focus, and creativity on the board. I’ve worked both online and in person, always ensuring each student feels supported, motivated, and confident. I use a mix of modern tools (like Lichess and Chess.com), personal worksheets, and game analysis to boost understanding. Whether you’re just starting or aiming to beat your rivals, I’ll help you unlock your potential and enjoy every step of your chess journey. I believe in clear explanations, patient guidance, and celebrating progress. From tactics and strategy to endgames and opening repertoires – we’ll work together at your pace, and you’ll see real results on the board!

My standard rate is £20 per hour for private online lessons. For regular students or siblings, I offer special discounts and flexible packages: • 5-lesson bundle – £90 (save £10) • 10-lesson bundle – £170 (save £30) • Group sessions (2–4 students) – £12 per person/hour I also offer a free 20-minute introductory call where we can discuss goals, assess level, and create a personalized plan. There are no hidden fees – all study materials, online tools, and follow-up feedback are included in the price. I’m happy to adjust times to suit your schedule, including evenings and weekends.
