It's all about good communication and teaching precisely what each student needs to improve. I identify those needs and focus on them, as well as ensuring areas the student wants to concentrate on are also covered. Helping with other subjects, such as tuning and lit care are also covered.
I'm personally recommended by Paul Weller and The Style Council's drummer, top UK drummer Steve White. I have 32 years as a professional tutor and drummer, and a 100% grade pass rate. Many of my students have gone on to enter the ACM, and turn professional. My lessons are fun, friendly, bespoke to each student and you'll make fast progress!

International Award Winning Jazz Guitarist
Ian is an extremely proficient and versatile drummer and it is always a pleasure to share a stage with him. His professionalism on stage is matched by his organisational skills offstage. He is also an extremely nice guy and I have no hesitation in working with, or recommending him to others.
Jim Mackay, 2014
When Ian stepped in at the last moment, I was amazed how well he locked in with me – it was as if we had played together for years. A consummate professional and outstanding drummer, who I’d always be delighted to work with.
Chris Hepworth, 2015
Professional Vocalist / Guitarist
Ian first sat behind the kit at the age of eight, after his father, an enthusiastic hobby drummer, brought home a mongrel kit from a band rehearsal. For Ian, it was an epiphany. He began studying with the revered Hampshire drum tutor, Albert Cooper, cutting his teeth on his first band at the age of fourteen, playing with musicians ten years his senior.
By eighteen, Ian was earning his living on the cruise-ship scene, moving into studio sessions, theatre, radio, television and depping work over the next four years. Studying for a time with the UK's leading tutor, and Mapex artist Bob Armstrong, by his mid- twenties, Ian was in demand by studios and live bands alike for his musical approach to the kit, and natural, technical control – see client and artist list below.
From age 22, Ian has been teaching – all ages from 4 upward, including EBD and SEN students, one-to-one, and groups. In 2003, he moved to Buckinghamshire, opened his drum school and began teaching in schools both public and private across of Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, London, Cambridgeshire and Buckinghamshire.
In 2009, Ian was invited by Vic Firth to join their international education team, and offered a place in the Professional Drum Teachers Guild, and offered a place with Hudson’s International Education Team.
Artist, Venue Roster and Official Endorsements
Ian is a Faculty Tutor / Clinician at the renowned Echo Factory, the new music academy in Leicester, and as a result of his 25 years’ experience as a professional drummer, is very pleased to be officially endorsed by Evans Heads, Liberty Drums UK, Impression Cymbals, ProMark Sticks, Cymbomute and Tunerfish and holds clinics in association with them across the UK for music schools, drum retailers, and youth organisations.
He has a monthly column, ‘Bee’s Buzz’ in Drumhead Magazine and contributes to Digital Drummer, the online magazine. Much of his work is short notice depping for bands across the UK, and his private teaching business in Bletchley – he is personally recommended by Paul Weller’s ex-drummer, Steve White (now with the Family Silver). Recent productions include The London Drum Show on the Liberty Drums stand, Jesus Christ Superstar, CD Unplugged, Cinderella, and shared the bill at The Best Of British drum event in London, with such luminaries as Ralph Salmins, Ash Soan and Nick Mason!

I have been playing drums since 1976, took formal lessons with Malcom Randall (sadly deceased) until the mid 80's. I have been in bands, and a jobbing dep drummer playing all styles since those mid 70's days. I had decided to take formal lessons again around a year ago, as I felt I was playing the same old fills all the time, and needed to try new things. Having researched drum tutors, I settled on Ian, having chatted to him, and the fact he comes recommended by Steve White. (Style Council, Paul Welker). Ian has streached my playing & technique. Very friendly with a relaxed teaching technique, you will not realize how much you've learned until the next time you sit at your kit. Whatever your level of playing, Ian is certainly the tutor for you. Glyn Edwards.
