Students come to tutoring because they want to achieve something. So, I approach tutoring like training for an event, and my job as a tutor is to help the student achieve their aim. Focussed practice is the most well-documented and robust form for skill improvement - so I build my teaching around practice.
Practice in Maths and Science is around problems, so past papers for a target test play a key role in my teaching. We often work through problems together in lessons or go through problems that have been struggled with between lessons
Sometimes students struggle to grasp fundamental concepts as their teachers manage a large group. The next key element of my teaching is an explanation of fundamental concepts. I will use problems for practice, but I will not neglect to explain the fundamental concepts that allow students to solve these problems.
For memorisation of these fundamental concepts, I will use something called the Feynman technique which tasks the student with being able to explain and teach the concept to me before we can move on. This is an incredibly effective way to memorize Math and Science concepts for tests.
The final key element of tutoring is coaching. Providing encouragement and accountability while the student completes their practice and is hit with inevitable dips in motivation. Reminding students of their desired outcome and the reason they began practice in the first place.
If you try a free lesson with me we will:
1) Use an initial lesson to develop the desired outcome with the student e.g a certain score at A level.
2) I will then transfer these into clear, measurable actionable process goals e.g 20 practice problems a week for 8 weeks, and a 'success plan' with tactics to keep us on track
Then if the process is followed I can guarantee we will get the result we aim for.
