About Paul
At the age of 52, after 30 years as an accountant, of which the last 15 was as Finance Director of a charity, I made a career change into teaching. Although I soon discovered that I was a good teacher, like many teachers I found the school environment to be extremely tough.
And then I discovered tutoring and I absolutely loved it. I was able to use all my teaching skills with students who gave me their full attention, were not afraid to ask questions and, above all, were learning. I really think this has to be one of the most satisfying jobs there is. And to top it all, it turns out that I am extremely good at it. My students love working with me, they appreciate the respect I show them and they get great exam results.

My main objective for most of my students is to build their confidence. That has to come first and then the knowledge and understanding can come through.
Without confidence there is the biggest obstacle to learning - fear; fear of getting it wrong, fear of looking silly. I get beyond that through endless patience, good open questions, humour, encouragement to have a go (even if you’re not sure) and by giving positive responses whatever answer is given. The student then gradually moves from ‘I can’t do Maths’ or ‘I hate algebra’ to that Eureka moment of understanding, often accompanied by ‘Oh, is not that hard is it’
We learn most by making mistakes, so I ask students to take risks - risk getting it wrong and give it your best guess if you’re not sure. And even if they get it wrong, the fact that they have really thought about it means that they are likely to then get it right with just a little help, thereby gaining a good understanding and being more likely to remember it next time.

We are so happy we found Paul! He tutored my daughter for her maths GCSE and was brilliant throughout. He is highly professional, engaging, and excellent at building confidence in the run-up to exams. I can't recommend him enough.
I have known Paul for nearly ten years as he has tutored math for my two daughters. He is very knowledgeable and patient and has made a big difference to the girls' confidence in their math ability.
Paul coached both my lads, one for fun (hes a maths whiz and was initially bored at junior school and loved working with Steve), the other struggled with the teaching style at secondary school, both my boys loved working with him (my eldest is high functioning autistic so it can be tricky to find someone who he is relaxed with, he and Paul worked like magic together, securing a solid GCSE grade 7 .
Paul is geniune and honest, he ended up coming back into our lives to teach my youngest and his friend together for GCSEs, and constantly told me he was happy to continue, but we were wasting our money as the lads were going to get 9's anyway.... Both boys disliked their school teacher and wanted to continue with Paul, once they were confident they had covered all the content with Steve we agreed to stop, but Pauls honestly wasn't wasted on me, nor was the fact that the continued tutouring was completely student driven.
In my experience Steve is patient calm, brings a sence of humour when needed and appropriately builds healthy bonds with the Students, allowing then to focuss on learning.Paul has tutored two of my children since Dec 2024, one in Year 11 and the other in Year 7. Since taking on this role, Paul has completely transformed both their understanding and confidence in the subject.
Prior to Paul’s tutoring, my Year 11 child showed very little aptitude in mathematics. Under his guidance, she has developed both the skill and confidence necessary to participate in a mathematics challenge at a local College, where she performed exceptionally well. This improvement has been remarkable and is a testament to Paul’s effective teaching methods. Because of Paul, we have gone from expecting around a 5 or 6 in her GCSEs to expecting an 8, and my child has expressed a desire to aim for a 9. She has currently (June 2026) completed two GCSE exam papers and found them quite easy.
Initially, my youngest was in Year 6. She had received a maths SATs score of 99 in her mock SATs, with a school-projected outcome of 103. Her final result was 108. I am confident that, had we started a month to six weeks earlier, she could have achieved Greater Depth.
Paul is diligent, reliable, and meticulous. He maintains excellent timekeeping and carefully documents my children’s progress, ensuring a structured and thorough approach to their learning. He communicates proactively if a session needs to be rescheduled, which demonstrates his professionalism and respect for our time.
In addition to his technical skills, Paul is extremely personable. My children feel safe and confident in his company. For example, I overheard my child voluntarily discussing her thought process in solving a problem, which reflects both her comfort with him and his ability to foster independent thinking.
I highly recommend Paul to you.Paul has tutored our son for the last 18 months during his maths GCSE. He has really helped our son’s confidence grow and has made a real difference to his predicted grades. We would recommend Paul to anyone.
