  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in pharmacy during at university. Part of studying pharmacy is about learning how to communicate, relate with and help people you service. I became really interested in helping others and this led me to tutoring my friends and other students around. I realised how rewarding it was, helping others understand complex topics. This then led me to make a profile and start tutoring at superprof, where I can share my knowledge and support other students in overcoming their challenges and developing themselves.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach pharmaceuticals. Under pharmaceuticals, you get a range of different topics such as calculations, OSCE prep, organic chemistry etc. Calculations are fun once you see the logic behind them. They’re like cracking a code. Theres only one right answer and I like how straightforward that is. OSCEs are my favorite though. You’re able to express yourself and watching someone go from nervous to confident is so rewarding. I like essay preparation the least though I am quite experienced in it.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my role model is my mother. She’s a doctor and she introduced me to the medical and social pharmaceutical world. She works really hard to help her patients every day. Sometimes when I see what she’s tired, I can tell that she loves the work that she does regardless. It inspired me to become a better tutor. One who cares about helping people and cares to see them grow and develop.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor should be patient, provide clear communication, and have empathy for people. Every student learns in a different way, it’s important to be adaptable to different students' needs. It’s also important to encourage students to ask questions. It fosters a safe space where students feel comfortable expressing how they feel and any challenges they may have.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my own OSCE exam at university, I froze on a station that I rehearsed a lot for. I started to panic a little and I knew the time was ticking but I managed to gather up my thoughts, maintain my composure and I ended still passing the station. It taught me composure matters as much as knowledge, so now I spend just as much time on building my students confidence as content when I tutor OSCEs.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When I was at university, I actually struggled a lot with my calculations. I never quite understood it like some of my peers did and that really used to get to me. No matter how m uh I practiced, there were always some questions that I couldn’t grasp well.

But now, I’m much better at calculations to the point where I can actually teach it successfully to students and help them understand how to work out the questions.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I really enjoy teaching itself, more than any single topic. It makes me feel happy when I’m able help someone understand a topic that they have been struggling with. Nothing beats watching someone finally understand something they’d been stuck on for weeks. I also really do enjoy the calculations, the chemistry and biology side of pharmacy where we look at medical conditions and their treatments.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am genuinely dedicated to my students’ success and I love to see them do well. I have an ability to make challenging topics more approachable and I am supportive. I’m committed to helping every one of my students reach their goals and develop their confidence.
