About Katie
Hi, I’m Katie. I’m a caring, considerate and patient, qualified and experienced primary teacher now offering tutoring after a break from teaching. I've missed working with children and I love that 1:1 learning can provide greater reward for both teacher/tutor and child, as well as more flexibility.
I’m passionate about supporting children to learn and for them to enjoy learning! I love seeing them achieve their best and have those ‘aha’ moments when things just click and make sense to them, improving their confidence and self-esteem along the way. I'm an enthusiastic and motivating teacher and aim to make sessions fun and engaging.
My PGCE qualifies me to teach any primary year group, but I find it particularly enjoyable and satisfying helping younger children; I taught Reception and Year 1 in a school in Surrey and also have experience in Nursery settings and Year 2. I currently volunteer with a charity supporting children in Years 2 and 3 who are struggling with their reading.
Playing and exploration is key to learning and I don’t personally believe in overly pushing really young children academically, but am also aware that some have a desire at an early age to know more and want to, for example, learn to read or learn simple numeracy skills. Teaching them the basics (such as phonics, letters, reading cues, comprehension, number bonds etc) correctly from the start helps improve their knowledge in a way that also complements their school or nursery education. And it can be done in ways that are fun too!
From experience, I know and understand the busy demands in a classroom, especially in state schools with 1 teacher and 30 children. Some children really benefit from out-of-school 1:1 support to encourage and help them in different areas of learning, be it stretching the more able or supporting the less able, via the methods best suited to each child.
I also appreciate that some parents may not have the time or specific knowledge (or maybe patience!) to support their children with their learning as much as they’d like to, and sometimes children respond and learn better with someone other than their parent or carer.
As well as providing sessions for children, I can offer sessions with parents to aid them to better support their children, eg with phonics and helping their children with reading, as this is approached quite differently to how many parents would have been taught themselves.
I can also provide sessions to offer advice regarding positive behaviour management, reward systems etc, or to help with the transition before starting school or moving to KS1.
Please feel free to email me with any questions or to discuss your requirements or to arrange an initial session to see if it’d be a good fit on both sides.
I’m based in SW London. DBS checked.
Please message me to discuss rate - it can depend on your child's individual requirements, length of the session, my travel costs/time etc.

Katie has been a friend for many years and she's always loved working with children in various capacities - she taught in a primary school for several years, assisted in a kindergarten during her time as a student and has always done a lot of nannying and babysitting. She loves spending time with her nephews and friends' children.
Katie is great at engaging children in games or conversations or nature walks which aid learning at the same time as having fun. She has hugely helped me with ideas to support my children and given me the insight to help them with their phonics and reading. When my son was struggling in reception as a summer born child she helped him with the phonics signs and taught me so I could help him too. I believe she can provide invaluable learning support for children/parents.I have known Katie for many years and she has the ability to build a connection with young children with ease. I have three young children of my own and she has spend many hours with them, helping them and shows great patience and kindness when when working with them on reading, drawing and other activities. As Katie moves to 1:1 tutoring I have no hesitancy in recommending her and know that any child who works with her will benefit from her warm and nurturing style of teaching.
