Find out more about Ayom Vocal Studio

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

When I was a child I watched the movie musical DreamGirls starring Beyonce & Jennifer Hudson and I immediately fell in love with the soundtrack and I think that was the first time I fell in love with the idea of turning my love of music into a career.
I have 2 favourite instruments, my Piano & Ukulele.
  • 2) Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Beyonce's I AM Sasha Fierce album.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

Don't be afraid of failure, in fact fail fast and quickly.
Starting something new can often feel nerve racking. However in my experience the more you embrace being bad at something the more space you give yourself to improve in the long term.
It also takes the pressure off of yourself and you can actually start to have fun and enjoy the process of learning.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

    our voice.
Yes your voice is an instrument and if you look at it from a Vocal Anatomy perspective, it resembles an instrument.
The reason I'd say it's the most complicated to master is because our voice is attached to us and so it takes a level of mind-body connection and lots of practice to truly master it.
But with the right guidance and confidence, it can be done.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Embrace the journey and know that they'll never really be a destination that will make you truly feel 'successful' because there's always new goals you'll want to achieve as life moves forward. And sometimes life gets in the way of our big plans and we have to pivot, so enjoy the journey and embrace the memories, time with family & the friendships you make on the way.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Cynthia Erivo - She's incredibly inspiring, I'm currently reading her book 'Simply More.' I'd imagine she'd share some really enlightening words & she seems like she'd be really pleasant to be around.
Megan Thee Stallion - I think she'd be such a ball to be around & I'd love to learn about how she managed her studies in the Health field while being a successful rapper selling out shows.
Leona Lewis - She's always been such an inspiration since I was a child and I imagine her to be such a delight to talk to.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

I remember when I was 11 and I performed in front of my school and it was my first time ever performing.
I was singing Last Christmas and I completely forgot the lyrics on stage and the kids watching started laughing.
I froze as the backing track continued to play in the background. Everything that happened after that is a blur.
It was completely embarrassing but I didn't allow failure to hold me back. I used that experience as fuel to keep going.
I practiced all year and I kept performing and learnt to keep going even when I did forget the lyrics.
I still forget lyrics now at the age of 26. But once you realise the world isn't going to end just because you forget a word, the easier it is to pick yourself back up.
Plus most people won't notice unless you make them notice, so relax, take a breath and keep going.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

What makes me a Superprof in music is my lived experience as a musician & vocal coach. My background in music education and my deep love & admiration for the art of music & the musicians I admire. Music truly is therapy.
