Qualified vocalist passionately teaching singing, piano and percussion (handpan, beatbox, rhythm and groove) in London

Methodology

My name is Andrin and I've been an ever-growing musician and teacher since my earliest memories. I teach children from grade one up to their A-levels and I also tutor adults who would like to widen their musical horizons and challenge themselves to become one with music. Age and genders won't matter here. As long as you're a student who welcomes a playful and yet disciplined approach to learning, I'm sure I can guide your development.
Usually I adapt my lessons to the needs of each individual student, but structurally I am always adhering to the key principles of pedagogy:
-Introduction of Lesson Content
-Reviewing previous session
-Collective approach on new technique/topic
-Transmitting theoretical knowledge to practical sensation
-Target-setting and further perspectives (homework/exams)

This way I want to make sure the student understands the course of the lesson and the goals we set to be achieved by the end of it. I value transparency and participation in structuring a lesson plan which is why I am totally open to closely elaborating a curriculum as a team (mentor and student).

Experience

I have studied Pedagogy in 2016 and 2017 (Pädagogische Hochschule Luzern) and am counting nearly two years of practical teaching experience in various forms. Teaching classes of up to 15 children (max. Grade 6) but also mentoring students in 1-2-1 lessons makes me a flexible and diverse tutor. Currently I am online-tutoring 14 singing, piano and beatbox students between 6 and 50+ years old. Predominantly I am following the curriculum/syllabus of ABRSM (Associated Boards Royal Schools of Music) and I rely on a professional set up including two camera angles, various microphones and direct-input instruments.
One of the main take-aways of my previous students was the enthusiasm that they’ve developed under my accompaniment as a coach. I manage to excite my learners’ curiosity with my own sparking passion and vivid interest in music.
As a musician and multi-instrumentalist with a lifelong experience in stage performance. I am a certified vocalist (BA, University of Sussex) and a trained pianist with over ten years worth of knowledge. Other instruments that I play are handpans, various other percussive instruments, beatbox and the recorder.

Perfect! Andrin geht extrem auf unseren Sohn ein und sorgt dafuer, dass Unterricht mit Spass einhergeht. Kompetent - empfehlenswert!

Andrin's response

Til is a keen learner and talented beatboxer. I very much enjoy seeing him progress and being there to guide him on his journey as a young musician. He has autonomously worked out a way to document our lesson contents and is eager to practise concepts/grooves/sounds we covered in the area of beatboxing.

Andrin's response

Timothy's pitching and tone in his voice are already at a high standard, which is why we can look at proper vocal technique and confident performance deliveries in the coming time. It's great to be working with such a young and talented learner. :)

Reece and Scott are both two incredibly enthusiastic learners who have a great passion for beatboxing. I'm happy to give them guidance in discovering their own style of mouth percussion.

I have worked with Andrin for more than five years now. We are in the same Band, we were studying at the same University and our roots are close as well.
I have learned so much about singing and percussion from Andrin. He is the first person I contact when I have a musical blockage, when I discover a new exciting Band (chances are that he already knows them).
Andrin is a talented songwriter, a talented singer, a passioned teacher and a damn good friend.

Andrin is an excellent musician, a musician who is always curious to discover more in music, he never stops learning. Andrin always looks for new paths in music, new ideas, new teaching approaches. He is a teacher who tries to understand the student and find a specific method for each person, as everyone is different and has different musical needs and skills to develop. I could not recommend this tutor more! Excellent musician (vocals, piano, percussions), excellent teacher and a great person. Andrin will not only help you develop your instrument skills, but will also help you finding your true self in music.

When I met Andrin more than a decade ago, his musical interest and skills were already outstanding. He's only become better since! It's mind bending what sounds he is able to produce with only his mouth and vocal cords! If you're interested in learnig how to beatbox, Andrin is the exact right Superprof for you. He has a remarkably wide vocal range himself and is thus very well capable of helping you extend yours.

His rhythmic competency isn't limited to beatboxing: he passionately helps you making your singing or playing groove!

Andrin is keen to make you feel comfortable and at ease and has a good sense for the needs and current level of his students. Choose Andrin as your Superprof and you're guaranteed to see yourself progress!

Andrin is a remarkable pedagogue and a very kind person. During our lessons he made me feel confortable and knew how to adapt his approach to make me understand and improve my vocal techniques. He's also a great musician. I would definitely recommend him!

Andrin is a very talented musician - and a brilliant teacher when it comes to any musical topic, may it be vocals, piano or any rhythmic lessons.
He’s a very straight forward person that uses different approaches to respond to each student individually.
He is also one of the kindest people I know and really good in making the people around him feel comfortable.

Interview with Andrin

QUESTION 01 | 08
1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
Andrin — I have definitely started developing a passion and a sense for music when I was still in my mother's womb. Even at the latest stages of pregnancy she would attend music and dance workshops and I would absorb whatever I could. From my earliest days on this planet I had my crib set up just next to a large group of adults playing the most wonderful music together in a group. Now looking back, I think it was kind of inevitable for me to follow the path of music in my own life. I have started discovering a passion for my favourite instrument, the voice, when I was three years old. I took part in weekly music lessons in a local music school and we got taught how to dance, sing, play and live music.
QUESTION 02 | 08
2) Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Andrin — Kabeção Rodrigues is a handpan player and a good friend of mine, whose music is incredibly soothing and calming to listen to. It can be consumed with but also without a lot of focus which is what makes it great and timeless.
QUESTION 03 | 08
3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Andrin — I consider the performance of a music piece as one of the supreme disciplines to achieve in music. There are so many factors that contribute to a great performance and it is sometimes very hard to keep them in mind when being in the spotlight. Also from a teacher's perspective the observation and the analysis of a performance requires a deep understanding of the matter and all its related influences.
I find workshopping a performance with a student is a process so rewarding for both the mentor, and the learner. We can both learn from each other at all times.
QUESTION 04 | 08
4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Andrin — Only quite rarely I see theremin performances that I find convincing and musically sophisticated. I think the theremin is an instrument that is extremely hard to wrap one's head around. Unlike on most conventional instruments the sound creation on this instrument isn't based on the activation of clearly visible or tangible parts of the "music tool" (like the drumhead on a djembé or the strings of a violin, for example).

The theremin much rather responds to us interfering with its magnetic vibration fields that it radiates. It isn't quite obvious where to put one's fingers in order to change volume or alter the pitch.

I think mastering a theremin requires much more knowledge on physics and acoustics and it needs a lot of patience to produce sound on it that matches a musical context and doesn't sound like an indecipherable message from aliens. Trust me, I have tried this.
QUESTION 05 | 08
5) What are your keys to success?
Andrin — Persistence, trust and genuineness
QUESTION 06 | 08
6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why
Andrin — Imogen Heap, Fin Greenall from FINK and Bobby McFerrin. Imogen and Fin because I have been in masterclasses they held and we have indirectly been in touch. They both seem such innovative, creative and yet, humble humans that will definitely be worth having a chat with. Meeting Bobby McFerrin would be an emotional rollercoaster for me, for sure! There's only a very few people that have had such an influence on my own growing as a young musician. Bobby definitely counts as one of them as has been touching me with his voice since my earliest days of life. Because of that, I think I perceive him as somewhat like a father figure, without him knowing that of course. It will be hard not to come across like an overexcited fanboy and to just treat him like any other human you'd get to know. But I'm sure over a ginger tea and a piece of cake we'd do great and just carry on talking about anything and everything.
QUESTION 07 | 08
7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Andrin — Music is a language that can be learnt by each and everyone. It is a language that can be understood even amongst people from opposite parts of the world. Sometimes words fail to explain what music can express with just one single sound. Just like we all had to learn how to walk and how to speak, we can learn music. With patience and never-ending will that outshines our failures we will all grow internally, externally and eternally. Step by step by step by step...
QUESTION 08 | 08
8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Andrin — When I'm in the role of a student myself, I enjoy being led by a mentor, who is there to guide me, to feed me with his/her knowledge and to challenge me out of my comfort zone.
For the past couple years I have built up mentorships between me and my students not only by being their examiner, but also by encouraging their growth, embracing their mistakes and approaching them on eye level to companion their learning.
As a mentor I think it is one of the most valuable skills to be a good listener and observer. I am trying to treat every student of mine as individually as possible by shaping each lesson just to a their needs. For this to work out, I rely on a pair of well-trained ears and a pair of sharp eyes.
