About Lai Yin

Got an A+ for Mandarin in both UEC and SPM. I am from Malaysia, my mother tongue is Chinese, my second language is English (IELTS C1 level). I am a language lover and have mastered over four languages: Chinese, English, Spanish, and Malay. I have experience teaching Chinese online and enough Chinese materials (textbooks and electronic homework files) for students. I love Chinese culture, and I will let students know the importance of Chinese in a relaxed way.

I am a 24-year-old undergraduate student, a Chinese part-time online tutor, with more than 3 years of experience. I teach basic Chinese (proper writing, pinyin pronunciation, daily things vocabs, ....).Each lesson is one hour long and I usually divide the class into four parts with 15 mins each to focus on writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Of course, that's all discussable on which part you want to focus more in our first trial lesson (30mins). Moreover, my classes are designed for children from 6-13 years old, as well as adults with zero Chinese fundation are welcome, with lots of practice sheets to help you advance in speaking confidently in Chinese.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Mandarin fluently primarily due to my origins. Mandarin is my native language, and it's the language I grew up speaking at home with my family. However, my interest in teaching and helping others learn Mandarin was inspired by my experience in a diverse and multicultural environment. I realized the importance of language as a bridge between cultures and decided to share my knowledge with others through teaching.
  • Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

One historical figure who represents the essence of Chinese culture and language is Confucius. His teachings and philosophy have had a profound influence on Chinese culture and the Mandarin language. Confucius' ideas and writings continue to shape the way people communicate and interact in Chinese society.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I particularly like the concept of "guanxi" (关系) in Chinese culture. Guanxi refers to the importance of building and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships, which is highly valued in Chinese society. It not only reflects the cultural nuances of the language but also plays a crucial role in effective communication and business relationships in China.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Mandarin is important to me for several reasons. It connects me to my heritage and family. It also enables me to bridge cultural gaps and build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. As a language teacher, it's my way of facilitating cross-cultural understanding and helping others become proficient in this widely spoken language.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main difficulties in learning Mandarin is the complexity of the writing system and the tonal nature of the language. To overcome these challenges, it's important to have a patient and dedicated teacher, engage in regular practice, and immerse oneself in the language through various means such as watching Chinese films, reading, and conversing with native speakers.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

One memorable anecdote from my language learning journey involves a cultural exchange program I participated in during my university days. I had the opportunity to visit China and stay with a local family for several weeks. This immersive experience not only improved my language skills but also deepened my understanding of Chinese culture. It was a transformative experience that reinforced my passion for the language.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My study abroad experience in Spain was a significant factor in enhancing my fluency in Spanish. Living in a Spanish-speaking country provided daily opportunities to practice the language, from ordering food to having conversations with locals. It not only improved my conversational skills but also gave me insights into the nuances of Spanish culture. I suppose that not every person has the opportunity to immerse themselves in the environment of their target language so I believe that by becoming a Mandarin conversational tutor can help a lot of people.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

As a Superprof in language, my strong foundation in Mandarin, extensive teaching experience, and the ability to speak multiple languages fluently set me apart. I am passionate about helping others learn and appreciate the nuances of the language. I tailor my teaching approach to the needs and goals of my students, making the learning process engaging and effective. I believe in fostering not just language skills but also cultural understanding, which is crucial when learning a new language.
