About Rebecca

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been a professional oboist and oboe, piano and singing teacher for the past ten years. I teach oboe, piano, singing and saxophone in several schools in the three counties area, and have previously taught at a private school for two years in Manchester. I teach at several school in the Hertfordshire area, and also am employed by Hertfordshire Music Service as a woodwind tutor. I am also involved yearly with Summer Music on the Shannon, which takes place in Ireland, and is an orchestral/teaching course for young and adult players.

Having played in many orchestras throughout my childhood, I love orchestral playing and the added bonus it brings to music making. I freelance with various orchestras and pit bands - most recently I have played in the pit bands for Les Miserables, Chicago, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods. Projects that I have done in the past include a tour to Montepulciano for the Cantiere Festival, a BBC Proms side-by-side with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, workshops with the Halle Orchestra and various recordings, including a soundtrack to Great Expectations and Mozart's Serenade in B flat 'Gran Partita' with Trevor Pinnock.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

DBS is up to date and available on request.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have studied with many esteemed oboe professors, including Jill Crowther (Philharmonia), Ian Hardwick (London Philharmonic Orchestra), Jonathan Kelly (Berlin Philharmonic), Jonathan Small (Royal Liverpool Phil), Hugh McKenna (Halle Orchestra), Victoria Walpole (BBC Concert Orchestra).

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Hertfordshire Music Service

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have many wonderful students that I am currently teaching at the moment - they range from 6 year old piano students to a 60+ recorder student, and each of them are enjoying music in their own way. I like to focus on having fun with music, as well as progressing forward with grades and techniques. I think this brings an enthusiasm to my students, an therefored they enjoy their practise and lesson times more than purely focusing on graded progress.

- Where do you teach?

I prefer to teach at my house in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, but am willing to discuss this with potential students.

- When are you available?

I will discuss times with you when you contact me. I teach afternoons/evenings Monday - Thursday, afternoons on Saturday and morning on Sunday. As I have a busy freelance schedule, I sometimes need to change lessons around, so a degree of flexibility would be needed - however, this is also reciprocated for you - so if an agreed regular lesson is not possible one week, then it can be rearranged.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach both children (5+) and adult learners - however, potential oboe beginner need to be at least 7 years old to cope with the breathing requirements of the instrument.

However, I also enjoy teaching students, and have several at the moment, that just want to experience music, learn more about the subject and improve their individual musicality.
