I believe that for effectively learning Japanese, the most important aspect is to understand the basic mechanism regulating the functioning of the language. Understanding the principles behind a certain linguistic construction is, in my opinion, more important to memorizing long lists of vocabulary or grammar rules taken out of context. That, I believe, is key to an easier and more successful approach to language learning.
I am a recent PhD in Japanese Studies at the University of Manchester. I obtained my BA and MA degrees (with honours) at La Sapienza University of Rome and L'Orientale University of Naples. I have a near-native proficiency of Japanese, acquired by living in the country for a total of approximately two years (one during my MA, one to conduct fieldwork for my PhD). I obtained the highest level (N1) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test in 2017.
Currently I am working as a Lecturer in Japanese language at the University of Leeds. During my MA in Naples I worked part-time as Japanese language tutor (private) for undergrad students at my University.
