About Rhiannon
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching in various roles for 15 years. Previously, I have privately tutored 13 young people between primary and secondary school age, some of whom were complete musical beginners, in 1:1 lessons. They have since taken grade exams with me achieving Merits or Distinctions and have gone on to join the school music ensembles, and even more advanced wind bands and orchestras. I have also taught 4 adults, helping them to hone their skills or master basic skills in the instrument. I also teach whole class primary music on various woodwind instruments. Before my current role, I was a classroom music teacher for secondary and sixth form pupils aged between 11-18.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes- I have an Enhanced Disclosure DBS certificate
- Where and with whom did you train?
I graduated with a 2:1 from Trinity College of Music, London where I studied Flute under Julian Coward (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and Piccolo with Alan Baker (English National Opera Orchestra). I have previously been taught by Lynda Coffin. I have had master classes from William Bennett, Ian Clarke and Wissam Boustany. I studied for a PGCE in Secondary Music Education and Specialist Instrumental Teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music which included flute tuition from Wissam Boustany.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am flute section leader in the Manchester Wind Orchestra, and regularly play with the Beethoven Symphony Orchestra, based in Manchester. I also belong to the Solent Symphony Orchestra and the Petersfield Symphony Orchestra, both based in Hampshire (my home county) for which I am their piccolo player. I travel down to rehearsals and play in their concerts.

I am an enthusiastic, fun teacher who tries to make lessons as enjoyable as possible. I am a friendly, approachable person with over 15 years of teaching experience who gets rewarded by watching a pupil progress, both musically and technically.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My main instrument is the flute, but I also teach clarinet and saxophone.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am currently working with MAPAS (Salford Music Service) as a woodwind tutor, Wider Opportunities whole-class teacher, and as an ensemble conductor. I have recently been awarded my Masters in Music Education from Manchester Metropolitan University with Merit. Prior to that, I spent a year studying for a PGCE in Secondary Music Education and Specialist Instrumental Teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music, and then worked in secondary schools as a classroom music teacher. I have a BMus (Hons) degree in Flute Performance with a 2:1, and my Licentiate of the Trinity College London (LTCL) in Instrumental Teaching both from Trinity College of Music, London. I took my Grade 8 Flute in 2005 and achieved a Distinction and my DipABRSM in Flute performance in 2006, also achieving a Distinction. I have 'A' levels in Biology, French and Music, and AS levels in Chemistry and General Studies.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £28 per hour, with half an hour at £14.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my house in Sale, which is about 10/15 minutes walk from Sale or Sale Water Park Metro stations and 20 minutes from Brooklands Metro. There is a bus stop very near the house which has very frequent buses from both Altrincham and Manchester City Centre through Timperley, Broadheath and much of the Trafford borough. It is very near to the M60/M56 as well.
- When are you available?
I have a flexible timetable, and consequently am free some afternoons and most evenings. I am also available on weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach any people of any age group. On flute, I teach beginners to Grade 8/ Diploma level. On clarinet and saxophone, I mostly teach up to grade 5.

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Rhiannon is a fantastic teacher as she is very enthusiastic and patient. My technique and tone have really improved and I feel much more confident tackling harder pieces of music!
Lessons with Rhiannon have been indispensable. Thanks to her tips on posture, breathing and embouchure (and her endless patience) I noticed a real improvement in my playing after just a short time. Rhiannon is very encouraging and I now have the confidence to attempt music I had previously found daunting. I have even started learning theory which I have always been wary of. Her lessons are well organised and her friendly, her confident teaching method make learning a joy. A lovely person and great teacher.
Rhiannon has a cheerful character and is an excellent teacher with all the qualities you need: she is competent, patient, encouraging, sensitive and energetic. She once told me the she couldn't imagine a life without music and this passion for music shines through.
Rhiannon has been my tutor for a year and I could not recommend her more highly! Having not played for many years I needed help to improve my technique and to get rid of any bad habits.
Rhiannon is excellent at describing techniques on breathing, posture and finger-work.
Her fun and bubbly, yet relaxed and patient attitude and style of teaching makes the lessons a pleasure, and I am sure that she would be excellent with younger learners as well as adults at any level.View more recommendations
