Rosie - West Greenwich - Singing

Methodology

Whether you're a complete beginner or more experienced singer I can help you understand the vocal technique behind great singing. Learn how to use your voice healthily and become a more confident, more accomplished singer.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Classical Singing.
I also tutor G.C.S.E music and music theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BMusHons in Classical singing from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama
Distinction in my Final Recital and also in my Teaching Skills module.
A-levels (Grade A) in Music, English Literature and Biology.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 an hour or £15 for a half hour lesson. I charge a small amount for travel depending on distance, cost and time.
A consultation lesson is £20 an hour.

- Where do you teach?

London: I teach from home in Lewisham, by Elverson Road DLR Station. I teach within the area, including Greenwich, Ladywell, Brockley, Forest Hill, Sydenham and New Cross, but will also travel to Central and East London; Angel, Islington, Old Street, Mile End, Euston, Baker street, and also to North London.

- When are you available?

Flexible times. Weekday daytimes and evenings and most weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Classical singing: I teach all ages and levels.
Music Theory: I teach up to grade 5.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM singing exams (with a 100% pass rate)

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Whether you sing in a choir or only ever sing in the shower, whether you want to do exams and competitions or you want to sing for fun I would love to help you develop your confidence, vocal technique and love of singing.

I believe every student should be taught good, healthy vocal technique and I encourage students to understand the way their body works when singing, almost as if they were an athlete as well as a musician (after all your body is your instrument). The emphasis on technique sounds dull but it really isn't! It's a means to an end. Understanding how your voice work takes the "I don't know what's going to come out of my mouth", "this might sound horrible" out of the equation. It gives you the confidence to know that you can sing the way you want to and it gives you the ability to achieve the sounds you want to achieve; how to sing softly at one point, loud and rich at another, how to tune notes perfectly and how to sound beautiful in every part of your vocal range. I find that the more my students understand about their voice the more they grow in confidence and enjoyment of singing.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

Teaching: I have been teaching singing privately for four years, both adults and children. I have had a detailed grounding in Classical singing technique and was awarded a distinction in my Teaching Exam as part of my degree. I have prepared pupils for ABRSM examinations and have a 100% pass rate. I teach singing at Burlington Danes Academy in West London where I also lead the senior choir. I also lead the church choir at St Francis de Sales in Stockwell and teach singing to members of the choir.

Performer: Professional experience includes roles with English National Opera (Two Boys World Premiere- June 2012 and The Perfect American June 2013) Madrid's Teatro Real (The Perfect American World Premiere Jan 2013) Holland Park Opera (Turn of the Screw 2014), Brisbane Festival and Spoleto Festival. I sing in the vocal quartet ffourtissimo who have recently appeared on Harry Hill's T.V Burp and the Matt Lucas Awards Show. I also run Literary Music, a group providing historical music and entertainment. I have also had experience of choral singing as a member of the Halle Youth choir.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have an up to date DBS.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Kate Paterson.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Equity

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I teach among others:

- several keen choral singers who used to find their voice hurt after choir rehearsals but now find it doesn't (and who even find they are now confident enough to audition for solos)
- a handful of primary and secondary school children who now have their ABRSM certificates on the wall
- a couple of students who thought they were 'tone deaf' (but discovered they weren't)
- a few students who are working towards auditions for higher education and for school entrance exams

One of the best things that has improved since I started having singing lessons with you, is that at the beginning of term in the choir, I used to come away with the feeling that I had swollen glands. Now, with all your breathing exercises , and using my tummy muscles, I now don't have the throat problem, and feel much more relaxed when I sing.
Thanks Rosie.
